Legends of Polish Equestrian - Horses

A horse of Polish breeding (Karol Skarbek), starting under Capt. Józef Trenkwald contributed to winning the bronze team medal in the eventing competition.

This is what Leon Kon wrote about Lionclaw's performance during the 1928 Olympic Games Amsterdam (the original language has been retained in the text):

"During the spring "Horse Championship" in Warsaw, he turned out to be a suitable shaft. gn. "Lew Claw, full-blooded, bred by Count. Skarbka service horse; rtm. Trenkwald, 8th floor, prepared personally by him. The rider and the horse determined their suitability to go to the Olympics based on the result achieved. (…)

As for the professional preparation of the arena, nothing could be faulted.

The judges were placed along the short wall of the quadrangle opposite the entrance, at a distance of several meters from it. This was an improvement compared to 1924. that each judge had a separate table and a secretary, as it has been done in our country for several years. In this way, it was impossible for one judge to influence another. (…)

The test was very slow with large gaps between one rider and the next. (…)
"Lion's Claw" under Capt. Trenkwald performed the work on the arena very nicely and correctly. He lacked presence, especially compared to horses of other nationalities. In this respect, according to the proposal, judges have quite a lot of freedom and 10 points at their disposal, which, after applying the multiplication, significantly change the arithmetic mean of this sample.
Lion's Claw lost several points because of this.

For the steeple, a distance of 4000 m has been set. time standard 6'40”, i.e. pace 600 mtrs. for a minute. (…)

Only two horses achieved the maximum time: "Donese" under Lt. Col. Rómmlem and "Flucht" gray class, German Lt. Zipperf. Therefore, individually in the steepleu ex-aequo, first place belonged to these two riders.

"Lionclaw" made up 33 seconds. and received 508 points; “Moja Miła” made up for 45 seconds, so she was awarded 514 points. (…)

The cross-country distance was 8 mtrs, the standard time was 000'17″ at a pace of 46 mtrs. for a minute. For making up every 450 seconds. (in the previous Olympiad, for making up for every 10 seconds) 5 points were added without using a multiplier (35). Covering the entire distance faster than 2'13", i.e. at a pace of 16 mtrs. per minute was out of the question. In this way, the maximum number of points a rider could obtain was 600 points.

Rtm. Trenkwald on the "Lion's Claw", misled by the markers hidden by the spectators, confused the parcours by heading in a different direction than he should have. The mistake noticed by the rider almost immediately was immediately corrected. However, turning the horse around and starting the race from the place where the mistake occurred resulted in the time being exceeded by 45 seconds. time standards, so he was given a multiplier of 157.5 penalty points for cross country, i.e. after deducting this number, he received 542.5 bonus points. The first privately bred horse in post-war history to become Polish Junior Champion. Over the next years, this stallion won several dozen shows, both national and international.
______________________________________________________________

Since 1998, the Białka Stud (formerly a stallion herd) near Krasnystaw has hosted the Junior Arabian Spring Show. And while each of them has its place in the history of breeding horses of this breed, the show, which took place from May 31 to June 1, 2003, was clearly remembered by the breeders. For the first time a privately bred horse won his class, the championship and became the best horse of the show.

And that horse was the gray colt Girlan Bey, bred by Katarzyna and Michał Bogajewicz, who were the owners of Niewierz Stud, located near Poznań.

Girlan Bey's ancestor - the gray stallion Ilderim db 1894 was imported to Sławuta in 1900. This stud farm for generations (1506-1917) was owned by the Sanguszko Princes. Picturesquely situated among forests on the Wołońska plateau on the Horyń River, which is the right tributary of the Pripyat.

As Stefan Bojanowski writes:You will not see such a second stable anywhere in the world because in this stable there are usually about 100 carriages and riding horses, and these horses are all stallions, and these stallions are all Arabians - because Prince Roman Sanguszko does not use any other horse for his harness and saddle only stallions and only Arabian. Sanguszów horses have high Eastern blood - constantly refreshed by the best original sires used. The Sławuta herd, i.e. the sires, mothers and youngsters, was not located in Sławuta itself, but in Chrestówka and is often called the Chrystowieskie herd.”

Arabella, chestnut mare, born in 1971 (Cross – Ata), bred by SK Pruchna.
______________________________________________________________

She spent one season on the racetrack. Trained by Dorota Kałuba, she won all six races in which she took part. Since 1975, the Oaks race has been named after her.

I remember that the breeders from Ochaby, Mr. Zygmunt Kwarczyński and Lech Strzałkowski, with whom I had the pleasure of working, were always proud of the bravery of their Anglo-Arabians.

(...)

Arabella won the Derby under Stanisław Karkosa confidently. She spent one season on the race track. Trained by Dorota Kałuba, she won all six races in which she took part. Out of the named races, apart from Derby, she also won Trial, Oaks and Stubna. Since 1975, the Oaks race has been named after her.

(...)

Arabella comes from one of the founders of the Pruchna-Ochaba Stud. Atalante xxoo (Maubourguet xx - Seduction xxoo) b. 1944 in France, she was one of the 40 mares purchased in 1946 by a commission under the direction of Eng. Stanisław Hay. In Pruchna, she founded one of the largest (currently 17 broodmares) and more valuable female families. Such well-known sports horses come from it, such as Darlet, to whom Jan Kowalczyk owes three of his 15 titles of Polish show jumping champion, or Elba (ex Astrala), on which this rider, in turn, starts) at the European Eventing Championships. Bursz, Babylon, Birbant, Argon, Dial, Danaos, Rangefinder, Akt or Atlantyk - these are the ones that did not reach the Darlet class, but were visible in Polish sport.

The addition of Arabian blood in Arabella's pedigree is small but excellent. Devil comes from a great sire line of Kuhailan Haifi, an original Arabian imported from the Arabian Peninsula Czort was a large horse for an Arabian and very brave; among others the other in Derby.

Arabella was a short mare (161-178-19,5 cm), very noble and dry. A chestnut with a red shade with a regular narrow arrow, in the opinion of the current stud manager, Bogdan Kuchejda, was not pretty, but it must be added - for an Anglo-Arabian. It would be difficult to see in her appearance Arab features, of which her pretty grandmother, Atavia, had so much.

He proved his superiority over him in Mokotowska and Criterium, which he easily won in Warsaw. In the spring, he suffers from laminitis, but luckily when he is cured, he competes ... St.Leger and is third behind DŻUDO and DENDRYT.

The season ends with an impressive series of successes: in the first group, the Pink Pearl Award (beating the stallion CZEMPIŃ), the Great Warsaw (on a highly flexible track, he leads from the start and suffocates his rivals with the pace - he beats KOMETA, CZUBARYKA, AKCEPTA, DENDRYTA, DŻUDO and the Derby winner by 5 lengths) SINAJA, making this race probably the game most often mentioned by Służewiec regulars) and Criterium again.

He becomes the Horse of the Year 1980.

As a four-year-old, he fights JARABUB and DŻUDO. He separates this pair into Golejewko and the Prime Minister, and beats JARABUBA in the Viewer's Award. He also wins the Kozienice Award (from SURDUTA).

Traveling is clearly not good for him, because in Kincsem Dij in Budapest and Grosser Kaufhof Preis in Cologne there is no room, and in autumn he passes the third target in Criterium.

Descending from the same female line as DIAKOWA, the younger half-brother of the triple-crowned winner of the Great Warsaw Championship, also trained by Józef Paliński and successfully used after his career in DIPOLA breeding, in the herd he turned out to be one of the best sires of domestic breeding in history.

Dixieland produced three Derby winners (BACHUS, LIMAK, SOLOZZO), excellent mares (DŻAMINA, DAXI, ZAGARA, TERENCJA, OMBRELIA, AMANDINA, BIBA MOJA MAŁA), winners of the classics (NAREDO, CORTEZ - in Austria), twice the first in the Great Warsaw in the SAN LUISA half-blood breeding, horses talented in jumping (ALMANZOR, BAŁAMUT or the half-blood Wukakawiska BANDEROLA).

He was in 8 state studs and only in one he did not give Dixieland the winners of the highest rank races.

In 1994 he became the Champion of Breeders, and in 1988 he was second in this ranking.

His daughters were excellent mothers, and the title of Horse of the Year was awarded to three of his offspring (LIMAK 1994, ZAGARA 1997, SAN LUIS 2005);

Its history dates back to the end of the 1896th century, when the Lubomirski princes established a stable of Thoroughbred horses in their estate in Kruszyn. In XNUMX, they bought the Widzów farm, where they built a modern stable for those times, along with paddocks.

The mare Bałałajka, gray, born in 1941 (Amurath Sahib – Iwonka III), bred by Krasnica estate.

She trusts people and friends. She was characterized by skin as black as ebony, covered with snow-white hair and huge charming eyes, from which she radiated goodness. Mother of Bandola, considered the queen of Polish Arabs.

“At that time, Captain Zdzisław Rozwadowski often visited Albigowa and knew all the mares well. Once he asked me which I value more: Wilga or Bałałajka. I replied without a moment's thought that, of course, Balalaika. And she wasn't that famous back then. Balalaika had a unique charm. It was impossible not to love her deeply. There was something about her that captivated everyone. She trusts people and friends. On the other hand, Oriole was able to get out of her box by stomping her front leg, which lasted until the undesirable culprit closed the door behind him. This was unthinkable for Balalaika. Kindness radiated from her beautiful eyes. I don't know if any other Polish Arabian mare was so graceful.

Black as ebony skin, covered with snow-white fur. Huge charming eyes, looking in a specific way. A beautiful head set on a long neck. A great mountain, on perfect, dry legs. I wonder how it was rated today in Janów. She wouldn't beat Pianissima, but Gascony would.

Unfortunately, in the times when Balalaika lived, exports were just beginning. If she had been born even ten years later, all her offspring would have joined the western breeding and had a great influence on it, as did Bask 1956 and Bacchatka 1957. Bandola 1948 almost shared their fate. Fortunately, she was already too famous in the country.

Almost all of Bałałajka's offspring were after Witraż, which was not inferior to her in charm, but certainly in character. (…)

Bałałajka gave birth to the unique BANDOLA (1948), recognized as the queen of Polish Arabians. Beautiful but tough. I treated her like a diamond in the crown, not like "cuddly" Arfa and their mother. She was more like her father, both in build and character. She gave birth to four daughters: Banda 1962, Beatrice 1963, Bandama 1970 and Ballada 1975, whose son was the well-known stallion Balon 1979, as well as five sons: Bajrama 1959 (Canadian Champion), Barysz 1960 (Canadian Top Ten) and used in the country: Bazaja 1964, Banata 1967 (British Champion) and very distinguished in Polish breeding Bandos 1964. Bandola lived to be 35 years old.

And in 1956, BASK is born, which is too famous to need to be written about. It is interesting that the weaker BANIO was used in breeding, and Bask was not allowed to cover even one mare before leaving for the USA. If Mr. La Croix had come to Janów one day later, he would not have found Bask a stallion. But God watches over good men and good horses. (Over the latter, Mohammed rather does.)
(...)

Unfortunately, Balalaika got very severe asthma in her old age and it was a pity to watch her suffer. And the doctors at the time couldn't help her. She needed to end her suffering...

There were not many mares in Poland similar in value and beauty to Bałałajka, although there are many great mares that made Polish breeding famous. Lately, their fame has been extended by Pianissima, with a beauty that in my time even a human could not have dreamed of being bred. But what will happen next…
