Legends of Polish Equestrian - Events

On 28 August 1979, the first Polish championship of pure-bred Arabian horses took place at the Janów Podlaski Stud, which preceded by two days the XNUMXth anniversary auction of horses of this breed.

For many years, the championships have been the basic method of evaluation and breeding selection of purebred Arabian horses, primarily in the United States of America, and also in some countries of Western Europe. In these countries, Polish-bred Arabian horses sold abroad (…) achieved many successes at shows, winning numerous championships, especially in the USA, and (…) in France and Sweden. For example, in the decade 1968—1977, in the stallion class, 3 stallions imported from Poland and 2 of Polish origin became US National Champions, and 4 stallions imported from Poland and 5 of Polish origin became US Reserve Champions, which together constitutes 90% of all reserve champions. In the mare group, 2 mares imported from Poland and 4 of Polish origin became US Champions in those years.

It should be emphasized that stallions that have won championships are much more successful, and breeding them achieves particularly high prices. Their offspring also achieve higher sums at sale.

Taking into account the high rank that the fact that a horse has won a championship or reserve championship gives to Western recipients, our breeding authorities decided to organize the first championship of pure-bred Arabian horses this year, in order to give even greater splendor to the top of our Arabian horses, which already constitute the world elite within this breed.

It should also be emphasized that championships have enormous spectacular value for the audience watching them.

The cream of the crop of breeders from the USA, Sweden, Germany, France, Belgium, England and other countries, as well as coach trips from France and Germany, arrived for the championship in Janów Podlaski, as well as for the 10th Arabian horse auction.

The Championship was organized by the authorities of the Animal Breeding and Trade Association and CIE Animex, with the active participation of the directors of the Arabian horse stud farms in Janów Podlaski, Michałów and Kurozwęki.

It should be explained that the basis for the assessment of horses competing for the titles of champion and two vice-champions is exclusively conformation and type, and in addition to great beauty and correct and harmonious conformation, very much attention is paid to the type of the horse. The judges do not know the names of the horses being assessed or their origin, and when giving their verdict they only state that they have selected horses with such numbers as champion and vice-champions.

As is customary in other countries, judging was done by one person. Foreign breeders were appointed as judges, which guaranteed complete objectivity. The horses selected for evaluation were shown in four groups - classes.

Class 1 – yearling and 2-year-old fillies – judged by the renowned West German breeder Holger Ismer. 15 young fillies (7 from SK Janów Pódl., 3 from SK Michałów and 5 from SK Kurozwęki) entered the extensive round: 8 grey, 6 bay and one chestnut. The championship was won by the 2-year-old grey Winda (Bandos — Wilma), bred by SK Janów Pódl., and the reserve champions were: the 2-year-old grey Gizela (Palas —Gilza) and the 2-year-old chestnut Żołna (Palas — Zazula), both bred by SK Michałów.

Class 2 — young 4- and 5-year-old mothers included in the breeding — judged by Hoist Eggert — president of the Arab Society in Germany. After a long, very detailed inspection of the 12 mares presented in this class (6 from SK Janów Pódl., 3 from SK Michałów and 3 from SK Kurozwęki), the judge awarded the title of champion to the 5-year-old grey Enklawa (Bandos — Engracja), bred by SK Janów Podl.; the vice champion was the 4-year-old grey Europa (Bandos — Eunice) from SK Janów Pódl., and the 11th vice champion was the 5-year-old grey Draperia (Gedymin -Dratwa) bred by SK Michałów.

Then, from among the 6 mares distinguished in classes 1 and 2, three judges (H. Ismer, H. Eggert and William Richardot de Choisey – director of the “Salon Konia” in Paris) selected the champion and two reserve champions of young mares. The title of champion was once again won by two-year-old Winda, and the reserve champions were the mares Enklawa and Europa, all from SK Janów Podl., and all sired by the stallion Bandos.

A special excitement, which the constant rain could not cool down, was caused by the exit of 18 older mother mares, assessed in class 3, to the round. The experienced breeders gathered at the championship and the numerous Arabian horse lovers had a unique opportunity. Before their eyes paraded the elite of purebred Arabian mares, such as could not be gathered in any country in the world. Of these 18 mares, at least half probably had equal rights to the title of champion. Therefore, the breeder from England, Patricia Lindsay, who judged this class, had a difficult task. She is an experienced expert in purebred Arabian horses.

In the interests of truth, it should be added that the group of 18 elite broodmares could have been slightly larger, but the breeders decided not to include several mares with small foals and those who could be harmed by long-distance transport in the championship. The champion was the beautiful, noble, 9-year-old bay mare Elewacja (Celebes — Eliota), bred by SK Janów Podlaski, the 10st reserve champion was the 16-year-old grey Artemida (Chazar — Atnhara), the XNUMXnd reserve champion was the XNUMX-year-old grey Fama (Nabór — Fregata) — both bred by SK Michałów. During the presentation of the champions, the type of the mares was clearly visible. The champion Elewacja, inbred to Witraż, represented the Kuhailan type, while the beautiful reserve champions — Artemida and Fama — were robust, large-framed mares of the Saklawi type.

The "beaten field" included a number of beautiful mares, such as Janów's bay Algeria (Celebes — Algonkina), the grey Euforia (Bandos — Eulonia) from Kurozwęki, the grey 16-year-old Béatrice (Picluszok — Bandola) from Janów, the bay Mitra (Celebes — Manilla), the grey Fatima (Negatiw — Fama) from Michałów and the only one in this group, the chestnut Janów Derby winner Orgia (Krezus — Orla), who, although she was not in her best shape on the day of the championship, we remember her as a beautiful four-year-old on the Warsaw Track.

Class 4 — stallions — was judged by the first breeder of Arabians in the USA, a loyal friend of Polish breeding, Dr. Eugen E. La-Croix (Łasina Arabians, Arizona). Eight stallions entered the round (seven from SK Janów and one from SK Kurozwęki). This important part of the championship was spoiled by the constantly increasing rain; the horses looked unspectacular, and judging was difficult. The champion was the 8-year-old, gray Eukaliptus (Bandos — Eunice by Cornet), and the reserve champions were the 7-year-old gray Partner (Eleuzis Panna) and the 5-year-old bay Aloes (Celebes — Algoa) — all bred by SK Janów Podlaski.

It is worth emphasizing that two champion mares and a champion in the stallion class are sired by the stallion Bandos (Negatiw — Bandola by Witraż).

The crowning achievement of the championship was the “Parade of the Distinguished”. The following paraded in front of the breeders and the audience: the first stallion champion Eukaliptus, then his mother, the beautiful bay mare Eunice (daughter of Comet), and then the 23-year-old bay Ellenai (Wielki Szlem — Eleonora) — mother of 17 foals, including Eleuzis 1962 (in the USA), the leading stallions in our studs Elfa 1963 and Elbrus 1965, Elkina — champion of the USA 1972, and many valuable mothers; the 4-year-old gray Etruria (Palas — Etna) — champion of the “Salon Konia”, Paris 1978; the 20-year-old gray Etna (Faher — Elżunia) — mother of 14 foals, including the stallions: Etiwa (in the USA) and the leading stallions in Poland Etapa and Etana; El Paso (Czort — Ellora) — champion of the USA in 1976, father of the mare Wizja — champion mare of the USA in 1977; 29-year-old bay mare Ellora (Witraż — Elza) — mother of the outstanding leading stallions El Azrak, Elfur and El Paso and a number of valuable mares; Banat (El Azrak — Bandola) — valuable sire and champion of England; and finally, the “first lady of Janów” paraded through, the legendary 31-year-old mare Bandola — mother of Bajram (in the USA), Barysz (in Canada), Bandos, Banzaj (in the USA), Banat and a number of valuable mares.

After selecting champions and vice-champions in each class, their breeders received prizes funded by various institutions.

The championships and the "parade of distinguished" were watched by a large audience, which rewarded the distinguished horses with applause.

In the afternoon, there was a screening of two films dedicated to Arabian horses, prepared for television and directed by Wiktor Meller. These films were made in cooperation with French television and are shown by the largest television stations in the world, bringing fame to our purebred Arabian horses.

On the following day (August 29) there was a show of horses intended for sale at auction.

The eagerly awaited day of August 30th has finally arrived - the annual and jubilee XNUMXth Arabian horse auction in Janów Podlaski. As usual, it was not known until the very last days how many buyers would come.

In the morning, foreign buyers individually viewed the horses they were interested in.

The auction began promptly at 14 p.m. It took place in a large circus tent that could accommodate about 2 people.

All the seats for the public were packed, but we were most interested in the sector designated for foreign buyers. This segment was equally packed, but there were many foreign observers there, as well as families of buyers and breeders. Before the auction began, representatives of Animex and ZHiOZ were pleased to note that almost all of our regular customers had turned up, and a few new ones had also arrived.

There were 22 buyers in the auction: 15 from the United States, 4 from Sweden, 2 from Germany and one breeder from Belgium, who turned out to be a very good customer. The auction was led by Marek Grzybowski from Animex, a master in this profession.

The horses shown in the ring looked very favorable in the spotlight.

The first mare to be brought out into the arena, the four-year-old grey Dotacja from SK Michałów, aroused interest and was purchased by Peter Herman from the USA for 37 thousand dollars, with a starting price of 20 thousand USD. The next 3 mares were quickly purchased by breeders from Sweden at prices close to the starting prices. No. 5, the beautiful Saklawianka Sekwoja from SK Kurozwęki, was sold to the USA for the sum of "only" 18 thousand USD.

Starting from No. 6, the intensity of the auction decreases; four mares find no buyers, while others are bought at prices close to the estimated prices.

A new mood was brought by the appearance of the beautiful, 7-year-old bay mare Algorada from the Janów stud. Despite the relatively high starting price (27 thousand USD), buyers started the auction energetically. In addition to her great beauty, the mare's origin was important, by stallion Celebes from mare Algonkin, and therefore inbred to stallion Witraż, and the fact that she is in foal to stallion El Paso. After fierce bidding, Algorade was purchased by Tom Lazor (Gingei Blue Arabians, USA) for 76 thousand USD.

Then, several mares were purchased at average prices. Only the gray Elegia (daughter of Comet) from SK Michałów was purchased to Patterson Arabians (USA) for USD 53.

There was a lively auction of the mare Willa (by Celebes) from SK Janów Podlaski. She was bought by Erik Sörensen (Sweden) for USD 36 (starting price USD 12).

However, the last eight mares attracted particular interest from buyers.

Dr. Eugen LaCroix and Dr. Egon Oppenheim fought for the 9-year-old Elizja (Celebes — Elipsa) from SK Janów Podlaski. After a fierce auction, the latter remained on the market, and the price went from 20 thousand to 60 thousand USD. The five-year-old gray Flinta (by Negatiw) from SK Michałów was bought for 50 thousand USD by our new client — Mrs. Dacja Depauw from Belgium. The same breeder acquired the beautiful 15-year-old gray Ceramika (Negatiw — Cerekiew) from SK Janów Podlaski after a lively auction.

Two valuable mares were purchased by Dr. E. LaCroix. The first was the 17-year-old daughter of Comet — the mare Arba from SK Janów Podlaski, for whom he paid USD 44, and the second — the 15-year-old mare Algoa (Czort — Algonkina) from SK Janów Podl. — sold for USD 88.

The course of the auction of the mare Algoa was the most fascinating. When the price went from 20 thousand to 50 thousand USD, only Dr. E. LaCroix and D. Patterson remained on the battlefield, and when the bidders reached 87 thousand USD, Mr. Patterson stood up, approached Dr. LaCroix and with no doubt regret (as this mare comes from a dam line developed for years at Patterson Arabians), but at the same time with a smile, gave him his auction number. Dr. LaCroix bought Algoe for 88 thousand USD. This price turned out to be a record at this year's auction.

There were two more interesting auctions. The heroine of the first one was the 9-year-old gray daughter of Negatiw, the mare Forsa, bred by SK Michałów, who had an exceptionally beautiful bouquet. With a starting price of USD 27, the auction was joined by such powerhouses as Dr. Skeggs, Dr. LaCroix and Tom Eazor, all from the USA, and E. Sörensen from Sweden. The mare was bought for USD 50 by Dr. Skeggs. The same breeder paid a "not bad price" - USD 75 for the 6-year-old daughter of Bandos - the gray mare Newa from SK Janów Podlaski.

Buyers showed less interest in stallions. However, they had the opportunity to buy the exceptionally handsome stallion Ellorus (Krezus — Ellora), bred by SK Janów Podlaski, for 50 thousand USD. This stallion is in no way inferior to his famous 3/4 brother — the stallion El Paso, US champion, for whom Americans were willing to pay astronomical sums. Or maybe it was a good thing that Ellorus will remain in Polish Arabian horse breeding?

The several Arabian geldings presented at the auction did not attract any interest from foreign buyers.

The final result of the auction in Janów was as follows: 26 mares were sold for USD 818 (average price per head - USD 000) and 31 stallions for USD 462 (average USD 2); a total of 28 horses were sold for USD 500 (average price USD 14).

The average price of a mare was about 1967 thousand dollars higher in the year (6) than in the previous year (1978 - 25 USD, 572 - 1979 USD). Therefore, this year's auction in Janów Podlaski should be considered a success.

A pre-war weekly magazine addressed to breeders, athletes, racing and horse enthusiasts. Poles for whom the history of our country is inextricably linked with horse breeding and equestrian sports.

Below we present the introduction to the first issue of the weekly Jeździec i Hodowca from January 1, 1922:

"By starting this publication, we do so in the belief that Polish sport and breeding have already entered the stage of creation, which requires a comprehensive exchange of ideas, critical illumination, and the establishment of the direction and goal of work, and this mediation must be fulfilled by a special body, the creation of which we are starting with the with all your energy. Although the Polish press, perfectly understanding the role of horse sport, has never spared space for all the symptoms of his life, it is our duty today to recognize the burden of the hospitable press, which faces the entire immeasurable area of state life.

Our publishing house is a timid, modest and tentative realization of ambitious dreams: by elevating horse sport to the dignity of a life phenomenon that plays an important role in it, and by dispelling the perfunctory, here and there still lingering opinions about the role - "fun" - of sport, to get closer to to Western beliefs in this direction, which placed sport among the most vital educational moments. These most correct beliefs are spread in Western societies through special bodies that enjoy great publishing power. They fulfill their informative, educational and propagating role in an unparalleled way, based on the experienced maturity of the belief that in the life of every nation, sport of any kind is not only a co-creative moment, not only a practical school of character, not only a high-ranking virtue, but that it is at the same time, one of the components of powerful social forces.

This is not the place to argue for the important role of sport; fortunately, the belief in this importance is becoming more and more widespread and the understanding of the historical role of the Olympic field and stadium arena is becoming more and more profound. The Olympic victor's wreath is one of the most noble and radiant symbols of human glory. The long educational work of special magazines among Western societies has had its effect; Our publishing house, dreaming of such great results, will try to do the same with noble persistence, according to its strength and resources. Often, enthusiasm and energy will have to replace resources, which will not obscure the clarity of our intentions. We are all in a period of hectic construction and foundation laying. And we are laying foundations on which a building may one day be built. We sow the first seed in the field we love with all our hearts. Maybe one day it will produce a rich harvest.

Our modest intentions to serve in every possible way in the field to which this magazine will be devoted, still have in mind a living, contemporary and brilliant example: here is our previous work in the field of sports and breeding, scattered by the war, almost killed, trampled to the ground by the war storm. — she came back to life. Not by a miracle - but by an effort of will. A handful of people who understood that what they do, they do not for public fun, but for the benefit of the Homeland, convinced of the social value of their work, unearthed this work from the ruins, brought it to light and illuminated it. Thanks to this tireless effort, the Polish State is assured of one department of the national economy, standing on the European high: the horse breeding department.

We will devote our writing to the life of this noblest creature, this most faithful companion in Poland's war and misfortune, to his works and triumphs; a soldier's comrade from Sammossiery, Krechowiec, a participant of the heroic August days, is worthy of more than just a few praises and rhymes. He deserves a painstaking and urgent chronicle, like a patient farm register, which will be a collective document of experiences to be used by everyone who understands the role of the horse in the national farm. Breeding a Polish horse is one of the national commandments. The splendor of its history and, more importantly, the splendor of its future, will be the primary concern of all the words that will appear on these pages."

All issues of Rider and Breeder have been digitized in cooperation with the Polish Horse Breeders' Association, BoberTeam, the Silesian Digital Library and the Cieszyn Library. Currently, the entire series is also in development by Polish Digital Equestrian Library.

The first Summer Olympic Games in which Poland took part. Our representatives won two medals, India. bronze (Adam Królikiewicz / Picador) and team silver (track cyclists).
______________________________________________________________

In November 1922, I was surprised by a summons to report to the Cavalry Department of the Ministry of Military Affairs in Warsaw. There I found out that I was appointed as an instructor of the CSKaw formation. in Grudziądz, a group of officers, candidates to participate in the Olympics in Paris.

I took the liberty of reporting that I had already been assigned to CSKaw., but the Commander resigned from my assignment because of my article in Bellona. It was explained to me that the group being formed would be subordinated to the CSKaw Command. only economic and disciplinary, and general training supervision will be held by Col. Zahorski, so there is nothing to be afraid of

When asked if I could name another officer. whom I considered suitable for the group, I had no hesitation in naming 2nd Lt. Kazimierz Szosland from the XNUMXnd Regiment of the University of Warsaw, who had already ridden there under my supervision, was a sincere horse lover and a very talented rider. My proposal was accepted and the appropriate order was signed.

(...)

The so-called Olympic group consisted of a dozen or so officers, ranging from second lieutenants to captains, and a little later also majors, representing various regiments of mounted weapons, who came here with their horses. They were all horse riding enthusiasts and if few of them made it to the Olympics, it was not because of lack of passion, but because of their abilities, the requirements for which were very high. Things weren't going well with the horses. There was a lack of horses of outstanding quality and we tried to fill these gaps with conscientious, systematic work. It took place in a friendly atmosphere characterized by mutual kindness.

After half a year of the group's existence, the former great competition rider Dymitr Ekse was engaged as a civilian instructor. He was partly Russian, partly Swedish, and apparently had German blood as well.

After his arrival, work continued as usual. I remained his deputy and, as a soldier, the group leader. Everything was going very well for us. With the arrival of spring and the beginning of the competition season, the entire group took part in numerous competitions to check the value of individual horses and riders. Mention should be made of the Warsaw competitions organized on the Mokotów race track by the Society for the Encouragement of Horse Breeding in Poland and near Krakow in Krzeszowice by the Krakow Society of Horse Riding Enthusiasts (if I remember the name of the Society exactly).

A little later than the Grudziądz group, a smaller sports group was established in Warsaw at the 1st Cavalry Regiment, led by Maj. Karol Rómmel. (…)

November 30.11.1808, 1 - An eight-to-ten-minute charge of Polish light cavalry (third squadron of the 1444st Cavalry Regiment of the Imperial Guard), on the Samosierra Pass in Spain at an altitude of 1 meters above sea level. The conquerors of individual batteries were the commanders: XNUMX/ rtm. Jan Kozietulski, 2/3 Capt. Jan Nepomucen Dziewanowski, last/second lieutenant. Andrzej Niegolewski.
______________________________________________________________

The morning of November 30, 1808 was a late autumn day. On that day, Ignacy Ferdynand Stokowski's 3rd squadron, belonging to the 2nd cavalry regiment, commanded by Major Piotr Dautancourt, called the "father of the regiment", was serving the emperor. Since the head of the 1st squadron, F. Stokowski, had not yet returned from France, he was replaced by Jan Leon Hipolit Kozietulski, the head of the 2nd squadron.

The 2 km long winding gorge of Somosierra led to a pass in the Guadarrama mountain chain. It was the shortest route to Madrid, 65 km away. The Spanish general Don Benito San Juan crossed the gorge with four batteries of 4 works each. The artillerymen were supported by the rifles of 13 infantrymen, "rooted" in the slopes of the gorge. This made Somosierra an impregnable fortress. No wonder that all the efforts of Marshal Victor's corps crashed against the walls of Guadarrama like a soap bubble.

In this situation, Napoleon's decision surprised everyone: "Charge of the chevau-legers into the gorge!" This order was received by General Piotr Ludwik de Montbrun, commanding the advance guard. He immediately led Kozietulski's squadron to the starting position, but when he was greeted there by murderous cannon and rifle fire, he informed the emperor that a charge was impossible in these conditions. The answer was clear: "Nothing is impossible for my Poles... to charge!" With this order, he pushed his adjutant, Major Count, to the 3rd squadron. Philip de Segur. Then everything happened at a dizzying pace. Kozietulski yanked his broadsword from its scabbard and, rising in the stirrups, shouted: "Forward! The Emperor is watching!”, “Vive l'empereur!” - the cavalrymen shouted. And the whole mass of people and horses rushed forward like a swollen river. Hell broke out in the gorge.

The charge lasted only 8 minutes. The squadron ran at full gallop, "march, march" - about 2 m, overcoming a rocky road winding up towards the end of the pass. Around every corner lurked the deadly throats of Don Benito's cannons. At the front, ahead of the squadron by several meters, was Lieutenant Stefan Krzyżanowski with four cavalry-legers as an eclair (scout). Behind them, the squadron column formed in fours was led by Kozietulski, with Count at his side. de Segur. When such an order is given, there is nothing left to do but say to yourself: "noblesse oblige". The squadron's column was opened by the 500rd company of Captain Jan Nepomucen Dziewanowski, and closed by the 3th company of Captain Piotr Krasiński. The four platoons included were led by lieutenants: Gracjan Rowicki, Ignacy Rudowski and Andrzej Niegolewski. None of them was over 7 years old, and Niegolewski celebrated his name day on that day.

The harvest of death was plentiful. The only officers who survived were: Kozietulski, crushed by a dead horse, and Krasiński and Niegolewski, who were seriously wounded. 14 privates were killed and 26 were seriously wounded. If we take into account that the squadron charged with half-companies (i.e. four platoons, not eight), and therefore had approximately 100 horses, the losses amounting to half of its personnel should be considered significant. All the more so because everyone was slightly injured (including Major de Segur). However, these losses were negligible for the army.

In 1926, in February, the first issue of "Wiadomości Wyścigowe" was published in Warsaw, which was the official body for horse racing published by the Society for the Encouragement of Horse Breeding in Poland, pursuant to the provisions of the "Racing Rules" established by the Minister of Agriculture as a result of the Act about horse racing. "Wiadomości Wyścigowe" announced all regulations regarding horse races and the totalizator, internal announcements of racing societies and reports from subsequent racing days, information on licenses issued to trainers, jockeys and stable staff, penalties imposed on people who committed offenses, stable statistics, horses and stud dogs, etc. However, no articles were published in "Wiadomości...".

For the first two years, the magazine had the subtitle: "Official Body of the Society for the Encouragement of Horse Breeding in Poland." In 1928, it was changed into the "Official Body for Horse Racing" and remained so until the outbreak of the war in 1939. The first editor of "Wiadomości Wyścigowe" in 1926 was Mieczysław Radwan. From the next year - 1927, Stanisław Haman edited this magazine for four years.

In 1931 and 1932, the editor of "Wiadomości Wyścigowe" was Jan Laszkiewicz, responsible in the Society for the Encouragement of Horse Breeding for maintaining the Stud Book of Thoroughbred Horses, the author of many articles about this breed of horses both in the interwar period and after the war.

In 1933, the editorial office of the magazine was taken over by Eng. Stanisław Schuch.

As calculated by Prof. The Prusai editions of "Wiadomości Wyścigowe" in the years 1926-1939 contained from 1012 to 1918 pages. The number of issues and their volume were not determined in advance, and "Wiadomości" was printed as needed. The last issues of a given year contained very valuable information for readers and those who complete the yearbooks of the magazine, right next to the issue, in parentheses, the word (last).

“After the outbreak of World War II, racing was interrupted and the publishing house was suspended. But the Germans resumed racing, first in 1941 in Lublin, and from 1943 also in Lviv. The horse racing authority was relaunched under a changed title as "Rennkalender für das generalgouvernement". The magazine was also published in Polish as "Race Calendar for the General Government". The yearbooks contained from 368 to 982 pages. The last issue under the rule of the occupier was published in Krakow on July 8, 1944. The yearbook was completed by the Polish authorities with number 5, published in Lublin on December 28, 1944.

In 1945, the publishing house returned to its former name "Wiadomości Wyścigowe", but from 1952, when the publisher became the State Horse Racing Tracks, a separate state enterprise - Warsaw, Race Track in Służewiec, the subtitle of the magazine was: "Official Bulletin of the State Horse Racing Tracks ".

Information on who the editor of "Wiadomości" is has ceased.

The Olympic Games in Amsterdam were the first Olympics where we won two team medals in show jumping - silver and bronze in eventing.
______________________________________________________________

Relatively early, in the winter of 1926/1927, a group was established to handle international competitions and select the representative team for the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam.

This group, called the Horse Sports Preparatory Group, was established in Grudziądz at the Cavalry Training Center and gathered a significant number of riders. The group leader was Lt. Col. Karol Rómmel, and the instructor was Capt. Leon Con. So it was, to some extent, a compromise and both largest centers, as well as both fields of training, were represented in the group.

At the Olympics in Amsterdam, Poland also submitted teams for only two disciplines, namely for Eventing 1 Nations Cup. This time, due to a change in the regulations, teams played in three-person teams. In addition, two reserve riders with reserve horses left.

The Polish representative team consisted of: Lt. Col. Karol Rómmel, Capt. Michał Antoniewicz, captain Józef Trenkwald, Lt. Kazimierz Szosland, Lt. Kazimierz Gzowski and as reserves - Maj. Henryk Dobrzański (Evening) and Capt. Zdzisław Dziadulski (Nations Cup).

This time the selection of horses was more homogeneous, and what is important - half of them were domestically bred. The following horses appeared: Moja Miła - a half-bred mare of domestic origin, the service of Lieutenant Tuński, with a racing past, Lwi Pazur - a half-bred mare of domestic origin, prepared by Trenkwald, Ali - a half-bred gelding of domestic origin, owned by Szosland, Doneuse - a full-blood mare of French origin, with an obstacle course and racing career, owned by Rómmel, and Readgledt and Mylord - horses of Irish origin.

All-round Riding Horse Competition. As usual, the competition consisted of three trials, dressage, endurance and show jumping. The program itself has not changed. 1 full teams and individual riders took part.

In this competition, Poland was represented by the following team: Lt. Col. Karol Rómmel on his mare Doneuse, Capt. Michał Antoniewicz on his mare Moja Miła and captain. Józef Trenkwald on his gelding Lwi Claw.

Show Jumping Competition - Nations Cup. The competition for the most valuable trophy - the team Nations Cup and individual medals - took place on August 12, traditionally on the last day of the Olympics, at the stadium in Amsterdam. The requirement was to complete a parcour with 16 obstacles, approximately 1,40 m high and 4 m wide, over a distance of 780 m at a pace of 400 m/min. At that time, 4 penalty points were counted for knocking down an obstacle with the front legs, and 2 points for knocking down an obstacle with the hind legs.

14 teams of three people and several individual players took part. A total of 48 competitors took part, both former Olympic champions and winners of the most important awards in both hemispheres.

The Poles participating in this competition consisted of: rtm. Michał Antoniewicz on Readgledt, Lt. Kazimierz Szosland on Ali and Lt. Kazimierz Gzowski on Mylord.

The team fight for the Nations Cup begins. The first Norwegian finishes with 16 points. Next, the famous Spaniard Trujillos leaves the track with 2 points. The third one is the gold medalist from 1920 and the silver medalist from 1924 - Tomaso Lequio on his famous Trebecco, but twice breaking and 6 points eliminates the Italian this time from fight for a medal. The sixteenth in line is Lieutenant Gzowski. Mylord, under his rider, is the first to complete the entire parcour without making a mistake, and the crowd generously rewards the Pole. (…)

On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the Relief of Vienna (1683) - on the initiative of Marshal Józef Piłsudski, on October 6, 1933, the last cavalry revue in the history of Polish military took place on Błonia in Krakow. The ceremony was attended by the most important authorities of the Republic of Poland: Marshal Józef Piłsudski, President Ignacy Mościcki and delegations from other countries.

Eighty years ago, on October 6, 1933, the largest - and last - Polish cavalry revue took place on the Krakow meadows. Lieutenant Colonel Dipl. Wacław Jędrzejewicz (from September 1933, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Treasury, later biographer of Marshal Józef Piłsudski), who took part in the celebrations in Krakow, wrote: It was one of the greatest celebrations I have ever seen in my life, and I have seen many of them. The direction of every moment of this kind of spectacle was perfected and aroused universal admiration. Piłsudski himself was pleased that the plan he had worked out in detail was a complete success.

The scenario of the Krakow event to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the victory of Jan III Sobieski near Vienna was planned by Józef Piłsudski from the spring of 1933, or maybe even earlier. In April 1933, a briefing was held at the Marshal's, attended by: Maj. Gen. Kazimierz Fabrycy, 2st Deputy Minister of Military Affairs, Brig. Gen. Bolesław Wieniawa-Długoszowski, commander of the 250nd Cavalry Division (Warsaw) and major diploma. Adam Korwin-Sokołowski, head of the Cabinet of the Minister of Military Affairs. It was then that Piłsudski issued directives regarding the celebration of the XNUMXth anniversary of Sobieski's victory at Vienna.

Wielka Warszawska (held since 1895) - one of the most important comparative races of the season (formerly named after the first reviver and protector of domestic breeding in independent Poland, Fryderyk Jurjewicz). After the war, Greater Warsaw was patronized by subsequent presidents of the capital until 2019.

Working at the Races requires love for the horse, dedication, patience and systematicity. It also requires great ambition and high morale. An athlete who does not hesitate to fight for victory in an obstacle race at the risk of losing his health or even his life is the best material for a future coach or selection worker. He passes all levels of initiation, and, supported by his knowledge and high sports morale, over time he becomes a more valuable employee of the track and a teacher of the younger generation.

Battle of Vienna (Relief of Vienna) - fought on September 12, 1683 near Vienna between the Polish-Imperial troops under the command of King John III Sobieski and the army of the Ottoman Empire. Ended with a total defeat of the Turkish troops.

The successful battles of Vienna (September 12, 1683) and Parkany (October 7-9, 1683) for the anti-Turkish coalition made Jan III Sobieski, the commander-in-chief of the victorious anti-Turkish coalition, a famous figure throughout Europe. Thanks to these triumphs, Vienna was saved and the Ottoman Empire was significantly weakened. In later years, the Empire took advantage of this, launching an ambitious expansion program in Hungary and the Balkans, and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which, under the Treaty of Karłowice in 1699, regained Podolia, which it had lost to the Turks in 1672.

The victorious Polish monarch was given many nicknames - the Defender of Christianity, the Lion of Lechistan, the Savior of the Homeland, and the Thunderbolt of the East. His fame was accompanied by numerous works of artists - including: painters, graphic artists, medalists trying to immortalize the achievements of the victorious victor. These activities were often consciously supported and sponsored by the king himself, who, in accordance with the customs of the time, typical of absolute rulers, saw them as a tool to achieve one of the main goals of his reign - to turn his family into a full-fledged royal dynasty. The way to achieve this was the Sobieski family's affiliation with the most important European aristocratic families. These plans met with opposition both domestically and abroad. In the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the nobility did not want to allow the king's position to strengthen, seeing it as a threat to the political primacy of their own estate in the state. Sobieski also failed to obtain consent for his children to marry the Habsburgs or Bourbons, which was influenced by the Sobieski family's origins, deprived of aristocratic titles and therefore modest from the Western European point of view. Only the less prestigious marriages of the royal children of James, Teresa Kunegunda, Alexander and Constantine with descendants of the electoral families of the Empire took place. These failures, together with the deteriorating health of the already young monarch, contributed to the fact that the second period of his reign, which fell after 1683, although exceptionally rich in terms of the king's artistic patronage, is considered much less politically successful than the first one. , dating from before the Relief of Vienna.

The history of the Arabian horse auction in Janów in the years 1996 - 2000 according to Marek Grzybowski.

"This year (2023 - note ed. PLPJ) the 53rd Arabian horse auction in Janów Podlaski is to take place. For over twenty first years I was the organizer of this auction, the author of many marketing solutions, the auctioneer and the co-creator of the great international success of Polish thoroughbreds. You can read about how it happened that people from the richest spheres of this world began to make pilgrimages to the poor, gray country behind the "Iron Curtain" in my memoirs "The Horse and the Polish Matter" published in Koni Polski No. 4-6 from 1994, currently available on the portal "Legends of Polish horse riding":

Chronicle of the auction in Janów 1970-1977
Chronicle of auctions in Janów 1978-1980, Polish Prestige auctions 1980-1985
Chronicle of the Polish Prestige auction 1986-1991

In these memoirs, I will describe the years 1996 - 2000, when the private company Polish Prestige raised the Janów auction from the fall of 1992-1995, provided the auction with independent financing and development and opposed the AWRSP's privatization plans, as a consequence in 2001 it was removed from the organization of the auction and erased from history. I will also point out the reasons why the "Pride of Poland" auction is not the pride of Poland, but a symptom of the decline of Polish horse breeding.

1996 "Life Raft"

The auction in Janów, after our departure from Animeks, was losing its importance year by year. When the result in 1995 fell below 50% ($381.500) compared to 1991 ($873.100), the breeders decided in the spring of 1996 to start talks with Polish Prestige. Negotiations took place against the position of AWRSP, which saw me as the main opponent of its privatization activities. At that time, I wrote a lot and appeared in the media in defense of state studs and herds.

The agreement with Polish Prestige was blocked by one of the Agency's directors, who attended the meeting with a gloomy face.

- "Titanic is sinking, we are changing to a life raft" - cut short director Jaworowski and the authority of the great breeder prevailed. On behalf of the studs, the agreement was signed by Ignacy Jaworowski, Michał Maciejewski (Andrzej Krzyształowicz had already retired), Andrzej Guziuk and Władysław Guziuk. For our part, me and Radosław Wiszniowski. It was a transparent agreement written on one page between partners who had known each other for a long time and had full confidence in each other. In return for an 11% commission, Polish Prestige was responsible for preparing and conducting the auction, settling the transaction and delivering the horses to the buyers. The costs of the auction were settled after the auction between the beneficiaries of the sale, in proportion to the revenues obtained. Polish Prestige participated in covering 11% of the costs. In fact, our share in the costs was greater than 11%, because the basis for customer acquisition was my trips to shows in the USA, Europe or WAHO congresses, financed by our company. Together with the breeders, we set the annual budget of the Festival, including the proceeds from sponsorship, sales of VIP cards, trade stands, tickets, catalogues, car parks, etc.
