Co-creator of Panorama Racławicka - Wojciech Kossak, was born in Paris on New Year's Eve 1856.

After his godfather - Horace Vernet, the author of The Death of Prince Józef Poniatowski and the Battle of Somosierra, Wojciech received a second name, and perhaps this fact influenced his passion for painting and Paris, although life bound him forever with Krakow.

(...)

And that was where Wojciech Kossak's painting had its beginning, where society was hungry for pictures with historical content, glorification of the old Polish army, sustaining the spirit of independence and longing for a uniform.

”He was, like his father, a battle painter, the creator of panoramas and large-format compositions depicting war episodes not only from Polish history, but also from French or German history, avoiding subjects glorifying the army, especially the Prussian invader, and at the same time - Polish defeats. He created many portraits, most often representative images of European society or aristocracy. He willingly portrayed himself, but he did not look for knowledge about himself or personality traits by studying his face. He most often treated the self-portrait as an opportunity to present himself with dignity.

Wojciech Kossak painted every day, from his early teenage years, first under the watchful eye of his father - in Krakow, then during many years of education at the Munich Academy and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. It was not easy for a young, ambitious painter from Poland to become known in Paris. (…)

Grand Hetman of Lithuania. One of the most outstanding European military commanders of the early XNUMXth century.

When in 1605 he defeated the Swedes at Kircholm, he was congratulated by Emperor Rudolf II, King James I of England, and even the Shah of Persia. Ottoman sultan and Tuscan princes hung his portraits in their palaces. "You have quite proved to be the most glorious and wisest general," wrote Pope Paul V to the victor.

He gained immortal fame during the fights with the Swedes in Livonia. Kircholm, where the hetman defeated an enemy more than three times as numerous, entered the pantheon of the greatest Polish triumphs. He was also included in the list of battles immortalized at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw.

The importance of the hussars in this battle is rightly emphasized, but throwing the "winged knights" into battle alone did not settle the matter. The result of the clash was largely determined by the genius of the man who was behind the actions of the Poles - Jan Karol Chodkiewicz.

Jan Karol Chodkiewicz he died on September 24, 1621 in a camp near Chocim besieged by the Turks. The hetman's body was buried in Kamieniec Podolski. The funeral took place in Ostrog, i.e. in the estate of his young wife. The choice of the place was a violation of the will of the hetman, who wanted to be buried in Kretinga, where the body of his first wife rested. In 1637, the coffin was moved to the tomb in the Jesuit chapel in Ostrog. After the outbreak of the Cossack uprising in 1648, she was transported to Wołczew, from where she returned in 1654. In 1722, she was transferred to the new Jesuit church in Ostrog.

Olympian. Rtm, 17 Greater Poland Lancers Regiment. Chevalier, among others, of the Order of Virtuti Militari, Legion of Honor, Cross of Valor 5 times. General at rest.

______________________________________________________________

Born on September 14, 1910 in Maciszewice.

In September 1999, the equestrian community spread the news about the visit to Poland of General Michał Gutowski - a pre-war cavalryman, Olympian, living in Canada since the end of the war.

Thanks to the efforts of the Polish Equestrian Association, General Gutowski was a lecturer during a special session of the training course organized at the Stud of Stallions in Łąck. There I had the opportunity to meet a man who created the legend of interwar Polish equestrianism - one of the few who remembered and participated in the successes of Polish riders in international competitions.

Mr. Michał Gutowski was then 89 years old. He was in excellent physical and mental condition. Watching films from his 88th birthday in Łąck, during which he rode a horse, overcoming cross-country obstacles smoothly and stylishly, it was hard to hide admiration and reflect on his own future.

Cavalryman. Chief of the 3rd squadron of the 1st Light Horse Regiment of the Polish Imperial Guard. First commander of the famous charge of Somosierra in 1808.

______________________________________________________________

Born on July 4, 1778 in Skierniewice.

"A knight of Somosierra and Wagram's battles, Smolensk, Jarosławiec, the toils of the Delbian region, an inseparable companion of the Processor of Europe... that is, Jan Kozietulski, one of the most famous Polish napoleonids, was not very lucky with historians, and his name was praised above all by poets and writers. It is to them that he owes the greatest publicity, and meanwhile even the date of his birth is controversial...

(...)

The young graduate of the Knights' School, as a favorite of the Czartoryskis, had excellent prospects for a career in the army, but after the third partition he became a subject of Frederick William III and the army had to wait.

Greedy for military merit, the young man's mind was eager for the legions gathering in Italy ... but these urges were stopped by his father and so Jan spent his time at banquets and drunken parties, being a typical representative of the then golden youth from the Walicki, Łubieński and Krasiński circles. These contacts resulted in Kozietulski's joining the Society of Friends of the Homeland, chaired by Wincenty Krasiński.

(...)

It was only in the late autumn of 1806 that the friends of the homeland, and with them Kozietulski, got a chance to show real patriotism. At that time, at the call of Dąbrowski and Wybicki, they set out as the Honor Guard to meet Napoleon from Warsaw to Poznań to ... block his way on the borders of our land, greet him as a savior and ask for the restoration of the nation ... These plans failed then, because they were forestalled by Jan's Poznań guard Nepomucen Umiński.

The only benefit of this escapade was that Dąbrowski enlisted the Warsaw youth who had arrived in Poznań to join the Polish army, and Krasiński obtained the privilege of creating an Honor Guard in the capital.

Patents for its subcommandants were obtained by Kozietulski and Tomasz Łubieński.

Only after Napoleon's arrival in Warsaw, the local youth could prove themselves as the emperor's escort in his daily rides around the capital.

From then on, Kozietulski was constantly with the emperor, also accompanying him when he went to the front line to watch the fighting culminating in the battles of Gołymin and Pułtusk. (…)”

Romantic, horse breeder, Crown Field Hetman. A descendant of the oldest and most powerful families of the Commonwealth. "Goldbeard Emir".

______________________________________________________________

Born on December 15, 1784 in Lviv.

(…) One of Wacław's biographers, Antoni Józef Rolle, noted:

"[...] the life of the Emir, although told so many times, has not yet been properly researched, and it is a grateful and instructive topic, even for a researcher."

Today, despite the fact that twenty literary works devoted to Rzewuski and almost twice as many studies on him have been written since the Battle of Daszewo, the above statement remains valid. The issue of the count's figure has not been thoroughly and comprehensively researched. The aforementioned studies mostly refer to selected fragments of his life, many of them were based on single or unreliable sources.

While the "hipological" and "Arab" thread of the Emir's biography was of interest to Orientalists and purebred horse breeders, researchers dealing with the issue of Polish underground and patriotic activities in the XNUMXth century did not pay much attention to Rzewuski. And it's an incredibly interesting topic. Lucjan Siemieński already wrote about Wacław:

“Nor do I know a man who, in our prosaic times, provided as much poetic thread as he, not only with his whole life, but even with his death. Flying in battle would be an ordinary thing - so many others have died and are dying like this - but to die mysteriously - without a trace ... not everyone can do it"

Piotr Jaxa Bykowski, one of Rzewuski's 1879th-century biographers, was aware of the imperfections of the studies published so far. He emphasized the need to fill the existing gap by conducting thorough source research. In XNUMX he wrote:

"By combining our monographs [concerning Wacław Rzewuski - FK], maybe someone, even more aware of things, will create one whole" (...)

We invite you to familiarize yourself with the dissertation, which attempts to present the whole issue, i.e. the biography of Wacław "Emir" Rzewuski, an assessment of his achievements, a description of the fate of his descendants and the history of the Rzewuski family from their legendary, fairy-tale beginnings.
