On 28 August 1979, the first Polish championship of pure-bred Arabian horses took place at the Janów Podlaski Stud, which preceded by two days the XNUMXth anniversary auction of horses of this breed.

For many years, the championships have been the basic method of evaluation and breeding selection of purebred Arabian horses, primarily in the United States of America, and also in some countries of Western Europe. In these countries, Polish-bred Arabian horses sold abroad (…) achieved many successes at shows, winning numerous championships, especially in the USA, and (…) in France and Sweden. For example, in the decade 1968—1977, in the stallion class, 3 stallions imported from Poland and 2 of Polish origin became US National Champions, and 4 stallions imported from Poland and 5 of Polish origin became US Reserve Champions, which together constitutes 90% of all reserve champions. In the mare group, 2 mares imported from Poland and 4 of Polish origin became US Champions in those years.

It should be emphasized that stallions that have won championships are much more successful, and breeding them achieves particularly high prices. Their offspring also achieve higher sums at sale.

Taking into account the high rank that the fact that a horse has won a championship or reserve championship gives to Western recipients, our breeding authorities decided to organize the first championship of pure-bred Arabian horses this year, in order to give even greater splendor to the top of our Arabian horses, which already constitute the world elite within this breed.

It should also be emphasized that championships have enormous spectacular value for the audience watching them.

The cream of the crop of breeders from the USA, Sweden, Germany, France, Belgium, England and other countries, as well as coach trips from France and Germany, arrived for the championship in Janów Podlaski, as well as for the 10th Arabian horse auction.

The Championship was organized by the authorities of the Animal Breeding and Trade Association and CIE Animex, with the active participation of the directors of the Arabian horse stud farms in Janów Podlaski, Michałów and Kurozwęki.

It should be explained that the basis for the assessment of horses competing for the titles of champion and two vice-champions is exclusively conformation and type, and in addition to great beauty and correct and harmonious conformation, very much attention is paid to the type of the horse. The judges do not know the names of the horses being assessed or their origin, and when giving their verdict they only state that they have selected horses with such numbers as champion and vice-champions.

As is customary in other countries, judging was done by one person. Foreign breeders were appointed as judges, which guaranteed complete objectivity. The horses selected for evaluation were shown in four groups - classes.

Class 1 – yearling and 2-year-old fillies – judged by the renowned West German breeder Holger Ismer. 15 young fillies (7 from SK Janów Pódl., 3 from SK Michałów and 5 from SK Kurozwęki) entered the extensive round: 8 grey, 6 bay and one chestnut. The championship was won by the 2-year-old grey Winda (Bandos — Wilma), bred by SK Janów Pódl., and the reserve champions were: the 2-year-old grey Gizela (Palas —Gilza) and the 2-year-old chestnut Żołna (Palas — Zazula), both bred by SK Michałów.

Class 2 — young 4- and 5-year-old mothers included in the breeding — judged by Hoist Eggert — president of the Arab Society in Germany. After a long, very detailed inspection of the 12 mares presented in this class (6 from SK Janów Pódl., 3 from SK Michałów and 3 from SK Kurozwęki), the judge awarded the title of champion to the 5-year-old grey Enklawa (Bandos — Engracja), bred by SK Janów Podl.; the vice champion was the 4-year-old grey Europa (Bandos — Eunice) from SK Janów Pódl., and the 11th vice champion was the 5-year-old grey Draperia (Gedymin -Dratwa) bred by SK Michałów.

Then, from among the 6 mares distinguished in classes 1 and 2, three judges (H. Ismer, H. Eggert and William Richardot de Choisey – director of the “Salon Konia” in Paris) selected the champion and two reserve champions of young mares. The title of champion was once again won by two-year-old Winda, and the reserve champions were the mares Enklawa and Europa, all from SK Janów Podl., and all sired by the stallion Bandos.

A special excitement, which the constant rain could not cool down, was caused by the exit of 18 older mother mares, assessed in class 3, to the round. The experienced breeders gathered at the championship and the numerous Arabian horse lovers had a unique opportunity. Before their eyes paraded the elite of purebred Arabian mares, such as could not be gathered in any country in the world. Of these 18 mares, at least half probably had equal rights to the title of champion. Therefore, the breeder from England, Patricia Lindsay, who judged this class, had a difficult task. She is an experienced expert in purebred Arabian horses.

In the interests of truth, it should be added that the group of 18 elite broodmares could have been slightly larger, but the breeders decided not to include several mares with small foals and those who could be harmed by long-distance transport in the championship. The champion was the beautiful, noble, 9-year-old bay mare Elewacja (Celebes — Eliota), bred by SK Janów Podlaski, the 10st reserve champion was the 16-year-old grey Artemida (Chazar — Atnhara), the XNUMXnd reserve champion was the XNUMX-year-old grey Fama (Nabór — Fregata) — both bred by SK Michałów. During the presentation of the champions, the type of the mares was clearly visible. The champion Elewacja, inbred to Witraż, represented the Kuhailan type, while the beautiful reserve champions — Artemida and Fama — were robust, large-framed mares of the Saklawi type.

The "beaten field" included a number of beautiful mares, such as Janów's bay Algeria (Celebes — Algonkina), the grey Euforia (Bandos — Eulonia) from Kurozwęki, the grey 16-year-old Béatrice (Picluszok — Bandola) from Janów, the bay Mitra (Celebes — Manilla), the grey Fatima (Negatiw — Fama) from Michałów and the only one in this group, the chestnut Janów Derby winner Orgia (Krezus — Orla), who, although she was not in her best shape on the day of the championship, we remember her as a beautiful four-year-old on the Warsaw Track.

Class 4 — stallions — was judged by the first breeder of Arabians in the USA, a loyal friend of Polish breeding, Dr. Eugen E. La-Croix (Łasina Arabians, Arizona). Eight stallions entered the round (seven from SK Janów and one from SK Kurozwęki). This important part of the championship was spoiled by the constantly increasing rain; the horses looked unspectacular, and judging was difficult. The champion was the 8-year-old, gray Eukaliptus (Bandos — Eunice by Cornet), and the reserve champions were the 7-year-old gray Partner (Eleuzis Panna) and the 5-year-old bay Aloes (Celebes — Algoa) — all bred by SK Janów Podlaski.

It is worth emphasizing that two champion mares and a champion in the stallion class are sired by the stallion Bandos (Negatiw — Bandola by Witraż).

The crowning achievement of the championship was the “Parade of the Distinguished”. The following paraded in front of the breeders and the audience: the first stallion champion Eukaliptus, then his mother, the beautiful bay mare Eunice (daughter of Comet), and then the 23-year-old bay Ellenai (Wielki Szlem — Eleonora) — mother of 17 foals, including Eleuzis 1962 (in the USA), the leading stallions in our studs Elfa 1963 and Elbrus 1965, Elkina — champion of the USA 1972, and many valuable mothers; the 4-year-old gray Etruria (Palas — Etna) — champion of the “Salon Konia”, Paris 1978; the 20-year-old gray Etna (Faher — Elżunia) — mother of 14 foals, including the stallions: Etiwa (in the USA) and the leading stallions in Poland Etapa and Etana; El Paso (Czort — Ellora) — champion of the USA in 1976, father of the mare Wizja — champion mare of the USA in 1977; 29-year-old bay mare Ellora (Witraż — Elza) — mother of the outstanding leading stallions El Azrak, Elfur and El Paso and a number of valuable mares; Banat (El Azrak — Bandola) — valuable sire and champion of England; and finally, the “first lady of Janów” paraded through, the legendary 31-year-old mare Bandola — mother of Bajram (in the USA), Barysz (in Canada), Bandos, Banzaj (in the USA), Banat and a number of valuable mares.

After selecting champions and vice-champions in each class, their breeders received prizes funded by various institutions.

The championships and the "parade of distinguished" were watched by a large audience, which rewarded the distinguished horses with applause.

In the afternoon, there was a screening of two films dedicated to Arabian horses, prepared for television and directed by Wiktor Meller. These films were made in cooperation with French television and are shown by the largest television stations in the world, bringing fame to our purebred Arabian horses.

On the following day (August 29) there was a show of horses intended for sale at auction.

The eagerly awaited day of August 30th has finally arrived - the annual and jubilee XNUMXth Arabian horse auction in Janów Podlaski. As usual, it was not known until the very last days how many buyers would come.

In the morning, foreign buyers individually viewed the horses they were interested in.

The auction began promptly at 14 p.m. It took place in a large circus tent that could accommodate about 2 people.

All the seats for the public were packed, but we were most interested in the sector designated for foreign buyers. This segment was equally packed, but there were many foreign observers there, as well as families of buyers and breeders. Before the auction began, representatives of Animex and ZHiOZ were pleased to note that almost all of our regular customers had turned up, and a few new ones had also arrived.

There were 22 buyers in the auction: 15 from the United States, 4 from Sweden, 2 from Germany and one breeder from Belgium, who turned out to be a very good customer. The auction was led by Marek Grzybowski from Animex, a master in this profession.

The horses shown in the ring looked very favorable in the spotlight.

The first mare to be brought out into the arena, the four-year-old grey Dotacja from SK Michałów, aroused interest and was purchased by Peter Herman from the USA for 37 thousand dollars, with a starting price of 20 thousand USD. The next 3 mares were quickly purchased by breeders from Sweden at prices close to the starting prices. No. 5, the beautiful Saklawianka Sekwoja from SK Kurozwęki, was sold to the USA for the sum of "only" 18 thousand USD.

Starting from No. 6, the intensity of the auction decreases; four mares find no buyers, while others are bought at prices close to the estimated prices.

A new mood was brought by the appearance of the beautiful, 7-year-old bay mare Algorada from the Janów stud. Despite the relatively high starting price (27 thousand USD), buyers started the auction energetically. In addition to her great beauty, the mare's origin was important, by stallion Celebes from mare Algonkin, and therefore inbred to stallion Witraż, and the fact that she is in foal to stallion El Paso. After fierce bidding, Algorade was purchased by Tom Lazor (Gingei Blue Arabians, USA) for 76 thousand USD.

Then, several mares were purchased at average prices. Only the gray Elegia (daughter of Comet) from SK Michałów was purchased to Patterson Arabians (USA) for USD 53.

There was a lively auction of the mare Willa (by Celebes) from SK Janów Podlaski. She was bought by Erik Sörensen (Sweden) for USD 36 (starting price USD 12).

However, the last eight mares attracted particular interest from buyers.

Dr. Eugen LaCroix and Dr. Egon Oppenheim fought for the 9-year-old Elizja (Celebes — Elipsa) from SK Janów Podlaski. After a fierce auction, the latter remained on the market, and the price went from 20 thousand to 60 thousand USD. The five-year-old gray Flinta (by Negatiw) from SK Michałów was bought for 50 thousand USD by our new client — Mrs. Dacja Depauw from Belgium. The same breeder acquired the beautiful 15-year-old gray Ceramika (Negatiw — Cerekiew) from SK Janów Podlaski after a lively auction.

Two valuable mares were purchased by Dr. E. LaCroix. The first was the 17-year-old daughter of Comet — the mare Arba from SK Janów Podlaski, for whom he paid USD 44, and the second — the 15-year-old mare Algoa (Czort — Algonkina) from SK Janów Podl. — sold for USD 88.

The course of the auction of the mare Algoa was the most fascinating. When the price went from 20 thousand to 50 thousand USD, only Dr. E. LaCroix and D. Patterson remained on the battlefield, and when the bidders reached 87 thousand USD, Mr. Patterson stood up, approached Dr. LaCroix and with no doubt regret (as this mare comes from a dam line developed for years at Patterson Arabians), but at the same time with a smile, gave him his auction number. Dr. LaCroix bought Algoe for 88 thousand USD. This price turned out to be a record at this year's auction.

There were two more interesting auctions. The heroine of the first one was the 9-year-old gray daughter of Negatiw, the mare Forsa, bred by SK Michałów, who had an exceptionally beautiful bouquet. With a starting price of USD 27, the auction was joined by such powerhouses as Dr. Skeggs, Dr. LaCroix and Tom Eazor, all from the USA, and E. Sörensen from Sweden. The mare was bought for USD 50 by Dr. Skeggs. The same breeder paid a "not bad price" - USD 75 for the 6-year-old daughter of Bandos - the gray mare Newa from SK Janów Podlaski.

Buyers showed less interest in stallions. However, they had the opportunity to buy the exceptionally handsome stallion Ellorus (Krezus — Ellora), bred by SK Janów Podlaski, for 50 thousand USD. This stallion is in no way inferior to his famous 3/4 brother — the stallion El Paso, US champion, for whom Americans were willing to pay astronomical sums. Or maybe it was a good thing that Ellorus will remain in Polish Arabian horse breeding?

The several Arabian geldings presented at the auction did not attract any interest from foreign buyers.

The final result of the auction in Janów was as follows: 26 mares were sold for USD 818 (average price per head - USD 000) and 31 stallions for USD 462 (average USD 2); a total of 28 horses were sold for USD 500 (average price USD 14).

The average price of a mare was about 1967 thousand dollars higher in the year (6) than in the previous year (1978 - 25 USD, 572 - 1979 USD). Therefore, this year's auction in Janów Podlaski should be considered a success.

A pre-war weekly magazine addressed to breeders, athletes, racing and horse enthusiasts. Poles for whom the history of our country is inextricably linked with horse breeding and equestrian sports.

Below we present the introduction to the first issue of the weekly Jeździec i Hodowca from January 1, 1922:

"By starting this publication, we do so in the belief that Polish sport and breeding have already entered the stage of creation, which requires a comprehensive exchange of ideas, critical illumination, and the establishment of the direction and goal of work, and this mediation must be fulfilled by a special body, the creation of which we are starting with the with all your energy. Although the Polish press, perfectly understanding the role of horse sport, has never spared space for all the symptoms of his life, it is our duty today to recognize the burden of the hospitable press, which faces the entire immeasurable area of state life.

Our publishing house is a timid, modest and tentative realization of ambitious dreams: by elevating horse sport to the dignity of a life phenomenon that plays an important role in it, and by dispelling the perfunctory, here and there still lingering opinions about the role - "fun" - of sport, to get closer to to Western beliefs in this direction, which placed sport among the most vital educational moments. These most correct beliefs are spread in Western societies through special bodies that enjoy great publishing power. They fulfill their informative, educational and propagating role in an unparalleled way, based on the experienced maturity of the belief that in the life of every nation, sport of any kind is not only a co-creative moment, not only a practical school of character, not only a high-ranking virtue, but that it is at the same time, one of the components of powerful social forces.

This is not the place to argue for the important role of sport; fortunately, the belief in this importance is becoming more and more widespread and the understanding of the historical role of the Olympic field and stadium arena is becoming more and more profound. The Olympic victor's wreath is one of the most noble and radiant symbols of human glory. The long educational work of special magazines among Western societies has had its effect; Our publishing house, dreaming of such great results, will try to do the same with noble persistence, according to its strength and resources. Often, enthusiasm and energy will have to replace resources, which will not obscure the clarity of our intentions. We are all in a period of hectic construction and foundation laying. And we are laying foundations on which a building may one day be built. We sow the first seed in the field we love with all our hearts. Maybe one day it will produce a rich harvest.

Our modest intentions to serve in every possible way in the field to which this magazine will be devoted, still have in mind a living, contemporary and brilliant example: here is our previous work in the field of sports and breeding, scattered by the war, almost killed, trampled to the ground by the war storm. — she came back to life. Not by a miracle - but by an effort of will. A handful of people who understood that what they do, they do not for public fun, but for the benefit of the Homeland, convinced of the social value of their work, unearthed this work from the ruins, brought it to light and illuminated it. Thanks to this tireless effort, the Polish State is assured of one department of the national economy, standing on the European high: the horse breeding department.

We will devote our writing to the life of this noblest creature, this most faithful companion in Poland's war and misfortune, to his works and triumphs; a soldier's comrade from Sammossiery, Krechowiec, a participant of the heroic August days, is worthy of more than just a few praises and rhymes. He deserves a painstaking and urgent chronicle, like a patient farm register, which will be a collective document of experiences to be used by everyone who understands the role of the horse in the national farm. Breeding a Polish horse is one of the national commandments. The splendor of its history and, more importantly, the splendor of its future, will be the primary concern of all the words that will appear on these pages."

All issues of Rider and Breeder have been digitized in cooperation with the Polish Horse Breeders' Association, BoberTeam, the Silesian Digital Library and the Cieszyn Library. Currently, the entire series is also in development by Polish Digital Equestrian Library.

______________________________________________________________

The Stud Farm in Janów Podlaski is a monument of our material culture. Unique because it is still alive, allowing breeders, horse lovers and numerous tourists visiting the stud farm to experience a journey into the past and breathe the air of the early 19th century, when horses were everyday companions of the people of that time.

Our task is to take care of the Janów stud farm with its horses, tradition, architecture and preserve this national treasure for future generations.

The stud farm's over two-hundred-year history clearly shows that regardless of the economic or political system, state stud farms had and still have a very important mission to fulfill. The aim of their activities was and still is to provide domestic breeders with access to genetic resources necessary for breeding.

This mission today is as important, or perhaps even more important, than in the past. History clearly shows that both in Poland and in many other countries of the world, horse breeding has experienced ups and downs. Large and highly successful private stud farms disappeared, and their achievements were not continued due to the lack of equally talented successors. The great sensitivity of private horse breeding to macroeconomic disturbances and random events causes a sudden interruption in the continuity of breeding work. Numerous examples, one of the most important being the history of the Janów Podlaski Stud Farm, show that state stud farms, resistant to economic factors, are a gene bank that allows field breeding to be reactivated after temporary crises. If the Jarczowiec, Sławuck, Antoniński and Radowiec mares had not been gathered in Janów after World War I, these lines, so important for breeding, would almost certainly have disappeared and it is difficult to imagine the modern breeding of pure-bred Arabian horses in Poland and in the world without their presence. On October 6, 1816, Tsar Alexander I of Russia signed a decree establishing the State Stud Farm and Stallion Stud. The over 200-year history of this stud farm is a beautiful history of Polish and world Arabian horse breeding.

______________________________________________________________

Both the stud farm and its horses owe their modern form to a man who, for fifty years of work, never missed a single morning round - Andrzej Krzyształowicz, a great charismatic personality and a wonderful breeder. When asked about the definition of success for the horses he bred, he replied: "You have to feel the issue and be there."

(...)

When it comes to breeding, I started to adopt Mr. Krzyształowicz's way of looking at horses. It wasn't exactly the same look, because I also had my own tastes, some ideal of a horse. Breeding is a constant necessity of choice. It would be great to be able to be guided only by your feeling of what you want to keep or sell. Let's assume that the stud farm is to have a certain number of mares. Their selection doesn't look like this: I don't like the one, I throw it away, and I keep the one that is of high quality. That would be too easy. Here, a compromise is needed between the interests of breeding, i.e. the quality of horses, and the interests of the stud farm, which must survive.

These goals are mutually exclusive in the short term, but in the long term they are very similar. However, to understand this and make appropriate decisions, the breeder and the economist must be one person. Then, as a breeder, no one will tell me that the money at the end of the year must be this and that, because he has planned three million for me and that's how much I have to earn. I will not order myself to achieve a certain income at any cost just because otherwise the company's financial plan will suffer. This price would be the sale of the best horses.

(...)

This is basically the quintessence of the Polish breeding philosophy: to have the most selected, highest quality broodmares possible and to constantly look for fresh blood, not to cause too much relatedness. We are constantly looking for different stallions that could produce good offspring with these mares. In Poland, efforts have been made to achieve this from the very beginning. This was the most convenient way and it was the fastest way to achieve breeding progress. Because a mare gives birth to one foal a year, while a stallion can be the father of hundreds of offspring. So its impact on breeding is huge. One stud dog in a stud farm is enough. If it's good, it takes it to the next level. And the old Polish rule was that stallions were imported from the desert. Expeditions rarely brought mares.

Some people did not understand what the mission of the state breeding farm was. Why, for example, can't the best stallions be made available cheaply and for each mare? Breeders usually think that their "babies" are the most beautiful. And that's why you go to reviews and shows, so that by judging you can become more objective about what you do yourself and what others achieve. State stud farms also exist to ensure that private breeding is as good as possible. No one ever refused advice or help, even though it wasn't always what someone wanted to hear.

(...)

However, there is something else that we will have to come back to and think about in the future. On September 28, 1937, Professor Witold Pruski founded the Horse Museum in Janów with an entry in the guest book. Due to the war, it could not be organized. I was planning such a museum, there are so many awards and trophies that I don't know what to do with. I wanted such a modern center to be built in the place where the "Wygoda" guest house is located. It is my great guilt that I have not been able to do this so far. And probably a challenge for his successors. When I left, I left the finished design of such a building with all the arrangements, and above all, with the approval of the conservator.

Honorary patron: Polish Horse Racing Club

Polish Horse Racing Club (PKWK): establishes the conditions for holding races and supervises their observance, works for the development and promotion of horse racing and the improvement of horse breeding, issues permits for organizing horse races, etc. [www.pkwk.pl].

In 1926, in February, the first issue of "Wiadomości Wyścigowe" was published in Warsaw, which was the official body for horse racing published by the Society for the Encouragement of Horse Breeding in Poland, pursuant to the provisions of the "Racing Rules" established by the Minister of Agriculture as a result of the Act about horse racing. "Wiadomości Wyścigowe" announced all regulations regarding horse races and the totalizator, internal announcements of racing societies and reports from subsequent racing days, information on licenses issued to trainers, jockeys and stable staff, penalties imposed on people who committed offenses, stable statistics, horses and stud dogs, etc. However, no articles were published in "Wiadomości...".

For the first two years, the magazine had the subtitle: "Official Body of the Society for the Encouragement of Horse Breeding in Poland." In 1928, it was changed into the "Official Body for Horse Racing" and remained so until the outbreak of the war in 1939. The first editor of "Wiadomości Wyścigowe" in 1926 was Mieczysław Radwan. From the next year - 1927, Stanisław Haman edited this magazine for four years.

In 1931 and 1932, the editor of "Wiadomości Wyścigowe" was Jan Laszkiewicz, responsible in the Society for the Encouragement of Horse Breeding for maintaining the Stud Book of Thoroughbred Horses, the author of many articles about this breed of horses both in the interwar period and after the war.

In 1933, the editorial office of the magazine was taken over by Eng. Stanisław Schuch.

As calculated by Prof. The Prusai editions of "Wiadomości Wyścigowe" in the years 1926-1939 contained from 1012 to 1918 pages. The number of issues and their volume were not determined in advance, and "Wiadomości" was printed as needed. The last issues of a given year contained very valuable information for readers and those who complete the yearbooks of the magazine, right next to the issue, in parentheses, the word (last).

“After the outbreak of World War II, racing was interrupted and the publishing house was suspended. But the Germans resumed racing, first in 1941 in Lublin, and from 1943 also in Lviv. The horse racing authority was relaunched under a changed title as "Rennkalender für das generalgouvernement". The magazine was also published in Polish as "Race Calendar for the General Government". The yearbooks contained from 368 to 982 pages. The last issue under the rule of the occupier was published in Krakow on July 8, 1944. The yearbook was completed by the Polish authorities with number 5, published in Lublin on December 28, 1944.

In 1945, the publishing house returned to its former name "Wiadomości Wyścigowe", but from 1952, when the publisher became the State Horse Racing Tracks, a separate state enterprise - Warsaw, Race Track in Służewiec, the subtitle of the magazine was: "Official Bulletin of the State Horse Racing Tracks ".

Information on who the editor of "Wiadomości" is has ceased.

The history of the first stage in the history of the Arabian horse auction in Janów Podlaski in the years 1970 - 1991 according to Marek Grzybowski.

Contemporary breeding of Arabian horses in Poland is the legacy of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which politically and culturally bordered the Orient, and the enormous magnate fortunes enabled the import of the finest stallions and mares.

This thought was the guiding idea for me to promote both the breeding and the Janów auction, which I gave the title "Polish Prestige" at some point.

In order to invite people from the richest circles of this world to the gray and poor country behind the Iron Curtain, it was necessary to convince them that the product offered was second to none, and what's more - it could only be created in Poland thanks to the huge expenditures and uninterrupted work of many generations of Polish breeders .

SOME HISTORICAL REFLECTIONS

The export of Arabian horses is a business in Poland almost as old as breeding. The first recorded transaction took place in 1800, when the Great Hetman of the Crown, Count Seweryn Rzewuski, sold the leading stallion of his breeding to the East Prussian Weedern herd. The proud magnate did not hesitate to give his horse his own name, which can be considered an excellent promotional move. A good name usually favors a horse's career, I dedicate this thought to the modern breeders of Relax, Fartów, Gryp and Floder. The stallion Rzewuski did not bring shame to his surname, his daughters were the backbone of the breeding in Weedern.

When today we are trying to win Middle Eastern markets for our breeding, let us remember that already in 1864 the Turkish sultan bought two stallions from the Branicki family in Biała Cerkiew: Inak and Jarzmo, and a group of 90 mares for his royal stud in Istanbul. The power of the Branicki breeding is evidenced by the fact that during 53 years (1818-1870) they sold 2009 horses and gave away 1231 horses as gifts, which was meticulously recorded in their studbooks. Could the contemporary Polish Arabian horse, valued everywhere in the world but almost unknown in its own country, not be an excellent Polish state gift, winning over crowned heads in Arab countries, opening contacts and exporting various Polish products?

Jarosław Koch is a breeder of e.g. the legendary mare Dżamajka, the stallion Dipol and the best obstacle horse in Poland - Masini. Longtime manager of the Widzów Stud.

______________________________________________________________

(…) he spent his childhood during the war years, as well as the first post-war years and then spent his holidays with his family in the countryside. It was then that he became interested in horses and rode them whenever he could.

In 1956, he graduated from Primary School No. 178 in Warsaw and, after taking the exam, entered the 1960th Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. T. Reytana, where he passed his final exams in XNUMX. In the same year he became a student at the Faculty of Animal Production at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences.

In 1958, he started horseback riding at the Warsaw Equestrian Club and competed in equestrian show jumping competitions, and was trained by the unforgettable Major Henryk Roycewicz (silver medalist of the Berlin Olympics in 1936). An avid eventer, he tried to turn the young rider into an eventing competitor, but it ended in 1961 during a competition in PSO Łobez with a fall from a horse and a broken collarbone. But he still rode horses in WKJ and in the morning trainings in the racing stables in Służewiec.

During his studies, he was a co-founder of the Student Equestrian Club at the Association of Polish Students, which was the first to promote equestrianism among students - he organized equestrian camps (holidays in the saddle) at the State Herds of Stallions in Starogard and Łąck, as well as trips to herds and stud farms, as well as hunting runs for students in stallion herd in Łąck.

On behalf of SKJ, Jarosław Koch was a member of the board of the Warsaw Regional Equestrian Association. In 1962, he completed a PZJ judge course and was a starting judge at an international horse competition in Warsaw at the stadium at Racławicka Street. He was also active on the board of the Zootechnics Circle at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, organizing science and equestrian camps in Białka, Ochaby, Sieraków and Łącko.

No one expected that the 46th Pride of Poland Auction in 2015 would go down in history, due to the record price for the horses sold, i.e. EUR 4,5 million, and above all for the price achieved by the gray, Janów-bred Pepita - 1 400 euros.

(...)

Pepita was born on January 29, 2005. In 2008, she ran at WTWK in Wrocławskie Partynice at distances of 5×2000 meters, 1×1800 and 1×1600, and her results out of 7 starts were 1xI, 1xII, 1xIII and 3xIV, which, as you can see, did not hurt her beauty, and was part of the philosophy Polish Arab who is supposed to be beautiful and brave. Its dimensions are 150 - 176 - 18,75. In 2010, she is fourth at the National Show in Janów, but already in 2014 she wins the mare class and becomes the Senior Mare Champion and Best in Show.

Pepita is the daughter of Michałów's multichampion, the gray Ekstern, who won all the shows in which he participated. In 2000 he became Polish National Senior Stallion Champion, All Nations Cup Champion in Aachen, European and World Champion. He also has the WAHO trophy, awarded in 2008 to an outstanding representative of purebred Arabian Polish breeding.

Pepita's mother - grey, with a beautiful coat from Janów, Pepesza is the daughter of the legendary Eukaliptus. She was born on February 1993, 6, and passed away on January 2018, 2006. She was sold at an auction in Janów in 135 for PLN XNUMX. euro. Her photo with the stable kitty won the cover of an auction catalogue. After the sale, the auctioneer said that this price also included this kitten. It is not known whether he went with his stablemate to Hennessy Arabians in Florida. She captivated with her type, swan neck, beautiful head and movement. In Janów, she left daughters Polifonia, Pernilla, Pensacola and Pepita, and sons Perseusz and Pegasus.

Yes dr. Stanislaw Deskur writes about the Polish stud dog of the century, founder of the most outstanding breeding line of sports horses in Germany:

Ramzes was bred at the Wojcieszków Stud and purchased at the beginning of 1940 for the State Stallion Stud in Janów Podlaski. At that time, there was no indication that this stallion would turn out to be the sire of the century in the future and his progeny would be successful in the most serious equestrian competitions on a global scale. Thanks to the messages of the director of the herd in Janów Podlaski, Eng. Tadeusz Marchowiecki, in whose area of activity the Wojcieszków Stud was located, we know the history of Ramzes starting from the foal age.

As I mentioned, Ramses' sire was the Belgian Thoroughbred stallion Rittersporn, who competed with good results in steeplechase races in Germany. As part of war reparations, he went to Poland and was included in the State Stallion Stud in Janów Podlaski. He came from the line of the well-known stallion Le Sancy, who passed on talent for jumping.

Rittersporn, standing at the mating point in Łabunie near Zamość, produced 1926 very good competition horses in 1927 and 8 and gained an excellent reputation, so many cavalry officers wanted to have a horse by this stallion. Therefore, repairs after Rittersporna went to the army like the proverbial water. Nevertheless, the lists of horses registered by the Polish Equestrian Association published in the interwar period do not mention any other horses after Rittersporn - apart from the aforementioned eight - which had more significant equestrian achievements. Also in breeding, the offspring of this stallion did not stand out. Three of his sons were purchased for the State Stallion Herds, one of which was culled after two mating seasons. From the 3s and probably until the end of his life, Rittersporn stood at the Wojcieszków Stud (Łuków district). The stud had about 1930 breeding mares and belonged to Maria Zyberk-Plater, who - as director Marchowiecki described her - "didn't know about horses, but she liked them very much and fed them well". As the example of Rameses showed, in some cases these owner-breeder attributes could ensure success.

In 1929, Maria Plater bought a yearling filly named Jordi at an auction at the State Stud in Janów Podlaski, which the stud lacked, so in the opinion of local specialists, she did not promise hope that she would grow into a good stud mare,

Jordi had a very good background. Her grandmother, the mare Astarte, was born in the well-known Austrian stud Radowce (now Romania) and according to the nomenclature in force there, her original name was 264 Amurath-8. Jonia's pedigree (see attached pedigree of Ramesses) was imbued with oriental blood. She came from a family marked in Radowce with the Roman numeral III, dating back to the beginning of the XNUMXth century. Three-year-old Jordi was included in Wojcieszków as a broodmare. Unfortunately, Jordi broke her front leg. In the then state of veterinary knowledge, the mare was in danger of being killed, but the owner did not allow it.

The mare was hung on straps, and the veterinarian fixed the limb in wooden splints. The leg healed, but crookedly. The mare was limping badly and any use other than breeding was out of the question. At that time, a wooden stable with a grassy paddock was built in the park in Wojcieszków, and there Jordi, together with her successive foals, spent time every year from spring to late autumn. Her third successive foal was Ramzes. Director Marchowiecki often visited Wojcieszków on business and observed little Ramzes, who gave the impression that he would grow up to be a stallion suitable for breeding in the future. Unfortunately, little Ramzes was haunted by family misfortune. In early spring 1938, the well-developed and overgrown and always cheeky Ramzes, while playing with his peers, accidentally fell backwards so much that he could not get up for several days. Maria Plater also rejected the suggestion that Ramses was not worth suffering any longer and should be killed. Massages and warm compresses of the loins were used to the point where after a few days Ramses, supported by people, would stand up and unsteadily stand on his feet. In the following period, it was as if he was learning to walk, and the unsteady movement of his hindquarters persisted for a longer time. Nevertheless, this condition improved and in the summer of 1939, the uninitiated did not notice Ramses's previous paralysis of the lower back and no such ailment occurred in him later. As I mentioned earlier, Ramses was purchased for the Stallion Stud in Janów Podlaski in 1940. According to director Marchowiecki, he represented the type of handsome, caliber Polish Anglo-Arabian, about 160 cm tall, grey with a dark mane and tail, with a dry, shapely head with expressive eyes, a long neck, prominent withers, correct loins and a long and well-muscled back. He was deep, had limbs with a correct posture with slightly rounded front cannons. In movement, Ramzes was beyond reproach, because he had a long and gliding walk, an energetic trot and a long, covering a lot of ground gallop.

Throughout the war, in the mating seasons, Ramzes was sent to breeding stations in the vicinity of Kałuszyn. Every year after returning from the points - like all young stallions in the stallion herd in Janów Podlaski - he usually had to take part in heavy hunting runs twice a week, in an area bristling with many difficult obstacles. Ramesses was distinguished by good and precise jumps, but his disadvantage was an aversion to water obstacles, which he passed on to some of his descendants. He must have been a good riding horse, since he was constantly ridden during quadrilles by the herd's equerry at that time, and in the future by the director of the stud in Janów Podlaski, Eng. Andrzej Krzyształowicz. Regardless, Ramesses was harnessed and walked in four-horse teams.

In July 1944, Ramzes together with the entire Herd of Stallions from Janów Podlaski was evacuated, reaching Cleverhof L. Lubeki as the final stopping place. After the end of the war, most of the Polish breeding horses in Germany were returned to the country, leaving a few especially talented in the sport in western Germany to represent our breeding. Among them was Ramzes, then ridden by Lieutenant Bielecki.

When Lt. Bielecki emigrated to Canada, Baron Clemens von Nagel-Doornick, the owner of the Vornholz Stud (Westphalia), with about 30 stud mares, bought Ramzes. Baron von Nagel - as I mentioned in the previous "Wiadomości Zootechniczne" - was the commander of the stud in Racot during the war, and because he behaved decently, as testified by his Polish employees, he was able to take care of his horse breeding after the end of the war. His idea was to breed good horses, primarily for the discipline of dressage and show jumping, which would ensure the continuation of German equestrian achievements from the interwar period. Being the son of the director of the stud in Beberbeck, he had the opportunity to get to know these horses well and decided to implement his plans based on them. He found a few horses with Beberbeck blood, the rest in Germany. He used the stallion Oxyd (lrrlehrer-Oxalis) and Hanoverian mares by Beberbeck stallions. He also used the Polish stallion Zew, bred by Jezierski from Worotniów (Łuck poviat), descended from a Thoroughbred stallion and an original Beberbeck mare.

The first post-war German Olympic team was prepared in Vornholz, competing in the dressage discipline in Helsinki in 1952, riding horses bred in this stud according to the breeding concept discussed above. This team won the bronze medal. There were chances of the same horses being sent again to the 1956 Olympics in Stockholm, but one of the horses lame and had to be replaced. This team also came back with a bronze medal, and one of the horses from Vornholz also won an individual bronze medal. Further Olympic successes of Baron von Nagel's horses were impressive. In Tokyo in 1964, the West German team took first place in team dressage. Remus took part in this team, winning the silver medal individually. In Mexico in 1968, the West German team took the same place in the same competition, and Mariano, who participated in it, also received a silver medal. In Munich in 1972, the West German team, which won the gold medal in show jumping, featured the gelding Robin. These three horses - Remus, Mariano and Robin are already sons of Rameses. During the first years of his stay in Vornholz, Ramzes competed in equestrian competitions under the excellent German horseman Brinckmann, achieving good results on a national scale. Baron von Nagel probably wanted to check the working value of this stallion. Ramzes ended his sports career in 1948, breaking his leg in training. Certainly it was a bad omen, because as we remember, his mother also broke her leg, and his father - stallion Rittersporn broke his leg twice. In this case, Baron von Nagel may have feared a hereditary predisposition; fortunately, in Ramesses' offspring such cases did not occur.

The use of Ramzes in breeding could also be discouraged by the failures of the interwar period in Racot - attempts to combine Hanoverian and Holstein mares with Racovian stallions - which were certainly known to Baron von Nagel. In addition, in the history of horse breeding, there has never been a case where a sire with such a large infusion of oriental blood in his pedigree, as characterized by Ramses, produced progeny outstanding in equestrian sport. In this case, Baron von Nagel showed great breeding intuition, allocating the stallion boxing in Vomhoiz to Ramzes. Ramzes stayed there until his death in 1966. In the opinion of German breeding circles, no sire of local or foreign origin has ever achieved such positive results with local mares as this Polish Anglo-Arab. Ramzes gave birth to a large group of outstanding sports horses, distinguished also in breeding. There was a time when every famous rider in West Germany rode a horse descended from this stallion. Of the sons of Ramzes, Radetzki and Raimond stood out in the kennel. The great-great-grandson of the former, the stallion Rembrandt, described as a horse that had no equal when it comes to the dynamics of movement, under his young amazon Nicole Uphoff, won the individual and team gold medal at two consecutive Olympics - in Seoul in 1988 and in Barcelona in 1992. It was a feat not recorded in the history of the Olympic Games.

Raimond's son, the stallion Ramiro, is currently the sire of excellent jumping horses. His daughter Ratina-Z at the Olympics in Barcelona in 1992 won an individual silver and team gold medal for the Dutch team. In addition, under German top rider L. Beerbaum, she took first place in the 1993 World Cup in Gothenburg. At the last Olympics in Athens, Ramiro's son, the excellent jumping stallion Royal Kaliber, won a team silver and an individual bronze medal for the US team.

The story of the horse, which was not overcome by the war, and which, after a long wandering, wrote a great page in its new homeland, had a huge impact on Arabian horse breeding and had its own museum during its lifetime.

In 1938, the Janów Podlaski State Stud gave birth to, among others, four colts included in the "Big Four - 4W". These were the sons of Ofir: Witraż, Wielki Szlem, Witeź II and Wyrwidąb (later known in Germany as Wind).

Director Andrzej Krzyształowicz, who started working at the stud as an apprentice in 1937, cited the then-common opinion that the first batch of foals by Ofir promised great hopes. They were properly built, distinguished by their beauty and good moss. Unfortunately, most of them were lost in September 1939.

According to the then director of Janów Podlaski, a talented breeder, Stanisław Pohoski, Ofir was the best stallion bred in the last century in Poland. He was the son of Fr. Roman Sanguszko in Gumniska Kuhailan Haifi or. ar., recognized as the best Arabian ever brought to Poland. This stallion died after only two years of stud activity, leaving 1931 offspring, including the best one - Ofir.

Director Pohoski definitely valued Kuhailan type horses the most. This is probably why he placed Witezia in third place behind his peers - Witraż (from Makata to Fetysz) and Wielki Szlem (from Elegantka to Bakszysz), favored by him, if only because of the dam lines they came from. Witeź II son of the Federation by Burgas or. ar, a typical Saklawi mare, was smaller than them, but very elegant. (…)
