Józef Piotr Trenkwald was born on August 14, 1897 in Vienna. He was the son of Robert, a general of the Austrian army, and Hermina, Countess Fellner von Feldegg. (…)

On December 7, 1918, he joined the Polish Army and was assigned to the 8th Uhlan Regiment. Prince Józef Poniatowski in Krakow. In 1919, as a platoon commander, he fought against the Ukrainians on the Volhynian front, making bold and very dangerous raids against the overwhelming enemy forces, for which in January 1920 he was presented with the Virtuti Militari War Order. He participated in the Polish-Bolshevik war. He fought with Semyon Budyonny's Horse Army at Berestechko, Artasov and Komarov (August 31, 1920).

He commanded a squadron in the 1st Mounted Rifle Regiment, which in 1920 fought fierce battles with the Red Army. For his courage on the battlefields, he was twice awarded the Cross of Valor and the Silver Cross of Merit, the Bronze Medal of Valor, the Emperor Charles Cross, the Silver and Bronze Medal of Merit "Signum Laudis". In 1919 he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant, and in 1924 - captain.

Józef Trenkwald was a very good rider, and his superiors noticed his skills, qualifying him for the team preparing to participate in the Olympic Games in 1920. Poland was to make its international debut in Antwerp after 123 years of captivity. It was the first riding group that was established at the Central Riding School in Grudziądz based on the order of the General Inspector of Riding in April 1920. The organizers of the group were Lt. Col. Sergiusz Zahorski, Major Karol Rómmel (who took over the leadership) and Lt. Tadeusz Daszewski. In addition to Lieutenant Trenkwald, 14 other players were trained. However, the departure of Polish riders to the Olympic competitions did not take place because in mid-June 1920 the officers were sent to the Eastern Front and fought in the Polish-Bolshevik war.

Before the next Olympic Games in 1924, he was excluded from preparations due to a fracture of both bones of the left lower leg. In 1928, he received a third chance to compete in the Olympics. This time, no event interrupted the participation of the captain. Trenkwald in the Olympic competition. He qualified for the national team in eventing. The Concours Complet d'Equitation was held from August 8 to 12 in Hilversum near Amsterdam. After the first trial, in which the judges paid attention to the horse's exterior, the Poles placed only 17th place out of 46 teams taking part in the competition, but Captain Trenkwald on Lion's Claw took a high 12th place in the field of XNUMX riders. The field test significantly improved the position of the Polish team, which moved to third place, and the captain. Trenkwald was once again the best in the team. The last attempt at eventing, the show jumping competition was organized at the main Olympic stadium in Amsterdam. The parcours with XNUMX obstacles was overcome by Lion's Claw without any major problems and, ultimately, individually by Captain. Trenkwald took XNUMXth place. The remaining Poles won: XNUMXth place – captain. Antoniewicz and XXVI - Lt. Col. Rómmel, and in the team classification, the Poles won the Olympic bronze medal.

In the years 1923-1939, Józef Trenkwald participated many times in international competitions in Poland and abroad. He took part in the prestigious Nations Cup competition three times, and twice he was in the national team that managed to win the trophy. It was in 1931, in June in Warsaw and in August in Riga. In both competitions he rode the mare Madzia. He also competed in the Polish Equestrian Championships held since 1931, standing on the podium three times. In 1931, in Warsaw, on his horse, Partyzant, he became the 1933nd vice-champion of Poland in eventing, in 1937 in Warsaw - on Madzia, he won the title of runner-up in eventing, and in 1935, in Gniezno - on Zwiahel, he won the title of XNUMXnd vice-champion of Poland in the show jumping competition. He was involved in horse riding not only practically, but also theoretically, being the author of numerous professional articles in specialist magazines and cavalry periodicals of the interwar period. In XNUMX, the Polish Equestrian Federation awarded him the Honorary Equestrian Badge for participating in the games and winning the Olympic bronze medal.

Kazimierz Stanisław de Rostwo-Suski was born on September 21, 1891 in Karpowce in Volhynia. He was the son of Tadeusz and Maria Przyborowska. He graduated from the Real School in Krakow, passing the high school leaving examination in 1909. In the years 1909-1910 he studied at the Vienna University of Technology, and then in the years 1910-1914 at the Agricultural University of Tabor in the Czech Republic, from which he graduated with an agronomist diploma.

From August 1914 to October 1918, he served in the Austrian army. He participated in the First World War. In 1916, he was promoted to second lieutenant, and in 1918 - to lieutenant. On November 1, 1918, he joined the Polish Army. He was a professional soldier. In 1920, he was promoted to captain. During the Polish-Soviet War, he commanded a squadron of the 6th Uhlan Regiment.

In the interwar period, captain Kazimierz Rostwo-Suski served successively in the 6th and 4th Regiment of Uł., in the Cavalry Department of the Ministry of Military Affairs, in the School of Professional Cavalry Non-Commissioned Officers in Jaworów (1929-1930), in the 6th Mounted Rifle Regiment in Żółkiew (1931-1935 ) and in 21st P. Uł. Nadwiślańskie in Równe, where he was deputy commander from 1936. In the opinion of his superior (Colonel Col. Adam Korytkowski), he was an officer of upright character, strong will, extremely hard-working, proactive, with great initiative; very intelligent, sharp and precise mind; tactically very good, completely prepared to command the regiment. During this time, he was promoted - in 1931 to major, and in 1937 - to lieutenant colonel. In the spring of 1939, he completed the regiment commanders' course in Rembertów, and on August 13, 1939, he took up the position of commander of the 21st Regiment Commander. In the opinion of Brig. Gen. Władysław Anders, Kazimierz Rostwo-Suski was an outstanding cavalry staff officer and an exemplary quartermaster.

He became interested in horse sports in the early 1921s. In 12, a Riding Club was established in Warsaw, which in the first days of June organized equestrian competitions on the horse racing track at Pola Mokotowskie. Twelve competitions were held then, and one of the main prizes was won by Captain. Kazimierz Rostwo-Suski on his horse Gogo. As a very good rider, in 1921 he was sent to a horse riding course at the Central Riding School (hereinafter referred to as CSJ) in Grudziądz, and in 1922 he qualified, together with the horses: General, Kleopatra and Qui Vive, for the Olympic group established in Warsaw at 1st Light Cavalry Regiment, led by Maj. Karol Rómmel. The second group led by Maj. Dymitr Exe and Lt. Leon Kon was established in Grudziądz at CSJ. In 1924, representatives of both groups took part in many international competitions, which were a test before the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris and were to ultimately determine the composition of the national team. Rtm. Rostwo-Suski participated in competitions in Nice, where he was part of the team that took 31th place in the Nations Cup on Generale, and in Lucerne, where Polish riders won a total of XNUMX awards.

In Poland's Olympic debut at the Games in Paris in 1924, he represented the national colors in eventing, held from July 21 to 26. 46 competitors from 13 countries took part in the competition, including 10 national teams. In the Polish team, apart from Rtm. Kazimierz Rostwo-Suski, who, due to an injury to his best horse General, started on the reserve Lady, also included: Lt. Col. K. Rómmel, Maj. T. Komorowski and Lt. K. Szosland. The competition was difficult, most of the Polish horses, shod by a French blacksmith, lost their shoes during the cross-country test, which did not have a positive impact on the course of the competition, but ultimately the entire team finished the cross country. On July 26, the last part of eventing took place - a show jumping competition. All the horses felt the hardships of the previous attempt and jumped reluctantly, but the Polish riders finished the competition intact. Ultimately, Kazimierz Rostwo-Suski was XXIV as the reserve Lady, the rest took the following places: X - K. Rómmel, XXIII - K. Szosland and XXVI - T. Komorowski.

In the interwar period Tadeusz Sokołowski was active in two sports clubs. In 1926 he worked in the Military Sports Club "Gryf" in Toruń, and in the years 1937-1939 he headed the equestrian section of the Military Sports Club "Legia" in Warsaw. (…)

As Cichociemni, he adopted the pseudonym "Trop" and Tadeusz Serafin. (…)

After a failed (due to betrayal by the guard) attempt to break free from the Minsk prison, Major Tadeusz Sokołowski, previously tortured during the investigation, was tortured to death on the stairs of the Gestapo building in Minsk on the night of February 6/7, 1943.

Tadeusz Sokolowski was murdered by the Gestapo in Minsk on the night of February 6/7, 1943. He was 38 years old.

In 1980, in the left nave of the church of St. Jack at ul. Freta in Warsaw, a plaque was unveiled in memory of soldiers of the Home Army, Cichociemni - paratroopers from England and Italy, who died for Poland's independence. Tadeusz Sokołowski is among the 110 fallen Cichociemni.

1st Regiment of Light Cavalry of Józef Piłsudski

(mp. Warsaw, amaranth border).

The regiment referred to the tradition of the 1st Light Horse Regiment of the Polish Guard of Emperor Napoleon I and the 1st Uhlan Regiment of the Polish Legions "Belina". It was recreated in November 1918 by officers of the former 1st Light Horse Regiment of the Polish Legions, headed by Capt. Gustaw Orlicz-Dreszer. From 1921, the regiment was stationed in Warsaw near Belweder. It was said to be one of the elite cavalry regiments of the interwar period. It was popularly called the "National Guard", although it never officially received this name.

Rejoice, brave cavalryman,
You have protection at Belweder.

The cavalrymen shake their heads,
They want to be the National Guard.

They shake their asses, they shake their heads,
They want to be the National Guard.

They want to have guardsman manners.
Be Be ery, cavalry.

Always proud of his boss,
This is Piłsudski's cavalryman.

The cavalryman takes the upper hand,
Under the patronage of the Belweder Palace.

In the Belweder Palace, in the quarters
Sleep, brother cavalryman.

And remember, cavalryman,
That you are on guard at Belweder.

From the parade and the celebration,
For the protection of the President.

They are sitting like this in Warsaw
With a glass and a coffee.

The whole bunch are suckers
In the First Cavalry Regiment.

More gentlemen than suckers,
This is the first cavalry.

Some gentlemen and painters,
This is the first horse regiment.

From aides and doctors
Warsaw has a regiment of brats.

Creator and trainer of the Volunteer Cavalry since 1993.

______________________________________________________________

Robert Woronowicz - the best rider among soldiers and the best soldier among horsemen!

Captain of the Polish Army, in the years 2000-2015 officer and head of training of the Cavalry Squadron of the Polish Army, captain of the volunteer cavalry, co-organizer and member of the board of the Federation of Volunteer Cavalry in the years 2006-2017, organizer of the structures of the volunteer cavalry (he had a significant contribution to the formation of the military squadron, he was active from the beginning as its instructor, in record time he prepared conscripted soldiers and horses for the first official appearance on J. Piłsudski Square), commander of the parade of the Horse Military Training "Krakus" on November 11, 1998, trainer and educator of several generations of amazons and cavalrymen, m. others co-founder of the Volunteer Cavalry Squadron in the colors of the 1st Light Cavalry Regiment of Józef Piłsudski (2001) and the Representative Volunteer Cavalry Unit in the colors of the Personal Guard Squadron of the President of the Republic of Poland (2019). by the 1st Air Cavalry Battalion and in many reenactments, movies, competitions.

He is the author of the regulations of cavalry competitions, as well as a multiple participant of the Polish Militari Championships and the author of the development of cavalry regulations and completed equipment projects (military saddle, lance) for the Cavalry Squadron of the Polish Army.

An exceptional distinction is the nomination of Robert Woronowicz by the Association of Regimental Circles of the Cavalry of the Second Republic of Poland in London to the Chapter of Colors and Traditions of the Cavalry of the Second Republic of Poland.

He began his adventure with the cavalry in 1989, when as an instructor at a riding camp, he provided horses to four veterans of the 3rd Rifle Regiment. Veterans, despite the fact that they had not sat in the saddle for several dozen years, coped with horses excellently, the horses walked like lambs, which showed him the quality and durability of cavalry training.

Captain Robert Woronowicz is interested in and supports the Representative Volunteer Cavalry Unit established in 2019 in the colors of the Personal Guard Squadron of the President of the Republic of Poland. He always asked where the lances were. He ordered (unobjectionable) lances in both ranks. This squadron was the only one in the cavalry to have lances in both ranks. With the publication of the entry mentioning cavalry captain Robert Woronowicz in a series of legends of Polish equestrianism, Messrs. Anna and Artur Bober handed over lances ensuring the proper appearance of the Branch.

The co-creators of the volunteer cavalry units recall:

“I met Robert at a time when horseback riding and cavalry traditions were not only not very popular, but also difficult to deal with. Robert always believed that a cavalryman must ride a horse, so he managed to convince wider circles of this and lead the cavalry out of the underground - he became famous as the commander of the first parade with the participation of a volunteer horse squad on Independence Day in Warsaw in 1998 (the first appearance of a volunteer squad at an official national holiday, in one formation with the Polish Army).

Another extremely valuable feature of a cavalryman, which Robert cherishes, is taking care of the horses he owned or looked after as a riding instructor, e.g. at the Olympic Preparation Center in Stara Miłosna.

Captain Tadeusz Kühn

Captain Tadeusz Kühn co-founder of the Volunteer Cavalry Squadron in the colors of the 1st Light Cavalry Regiment of Józef Piłsudski. Co-founder and in 2006-2017 member of the board of the Volunteer Cavalry Federation.

“As in the case of contacts with cavalrymen serving in the above-mentioned army during the Second Polish Republic, it is an honor to say about myself that I was shaped and raised by an outstanding instructor and officer. Lectures, especially cavalry classes on horseback, learning how to wield a melee weapon or how to behave in a uniform are unforgettable memories. Often demanding, especially towards the staff, but always kind and able to explain the principles of operation, sense and motivation of the cavalry ethos, he left no illusions whether someone was suitable for this service...

Since 2014, he has been enthusiastically running his own blog (rotmistrz.blogspot.com), which is worth visiting! I also had the pleasure to prepare for printing the original regulations of the cavalry (2014, 2020), which Robert prepared on the basis of military publications from the period of the Second Polish Republic, adapting them to the realities of the present day, treating the mission of the mounted cavalry in the Polish Army as typically representative.

Let everyone know that there is currently no greater authority in the field of cavalry practice than Captain Robert Woronowicz.

Captain Jakub Czekaj

Captain Jakub Czekaj, commander of the Representative Volunteer Cavalry Unit in the colors of the Personal Guard Squadron of the President of the Republic of Poland, president of the Regimental Family Circle of the 8th Cavalry Regiment, Fr. Józef Poniatowski, co-founder and in 2006-2013 a member of the board of the Volunteer Cavalry Federation.

"For two years after the war, I was looking for Polish Thoroughbred horses stolen by the Germans. Unable to accept the new political situation in Poland, I emigrated to South Africa, where I created a team of Lipizzan horses, following the example of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna.”

Jerzy Iwanowski
he was born under the partitions, in a noble family, in the estate of Lebiodka (this place is located within the current borders of Belarus, about 120 km in a straight line from the Polish border). As an 11-year-old boy, he witnessed the regaining of Independence in 1918, and as an adult doctor, farmer, landowner, horse breeder and soldier at the same time, he was an active participant in the process of its consolidation. He took part in World War II, and the post-war fate led him to Africa. He spent the last years of his life in Poland. He wrote, among others autobiographical book "Times of my life", in which he shared what was closest to his heart in his life.

His story is a perfect example of a patriotic attitude, which is expressed in active activities for the homeland, regardless of the place and circumstances that life brings.

Young Jurek Iwanowski, a graduate of the Tadeusz Reytan in Warsaw, he started medical studies at the University of Warsaw, and then graduated from the Warsaw University of Life Sciences. At the same time, in 1931, at the age of 24, he graduated from the Cadet School of the Cavalry Reserve in Grudziądz as a platoon cadet with assignment to the 1st Regiment of Krechowiecki Lancers named after Colonel Bolesław Mościcki in Augustów. After completing the annual, mandatory reserve military exercises, he was appointed a reserve lieutenant with assignment to the 23 Grodno Lancers Regiment. Shortly after his 27th birthday, on May 2, 1934, he was officially transferred to his home 1st Regiment of Krechowiec Lancers. He graduated from agricultural studies on November 17, 1936 and started working at the State Horse Breeding Plant as the deputy manager of the State Stallion Herd in Bogusławice. On January 1, 1937, he was promoted to lieutenant in the cavalry reserve. He was then less than 30 years old.

"Reader, if you agree with me that there are only two professions in the world worthy of a liberated and independent man, namely that of a poet and a cavalryman (so much the worse for you if you disagree with this statement, because it proves that you are neither one nor the other, and you are, however, even if you count only twenty autumns or pseudo-springs, an old and bald tetryk with aspirations to be a senior tax adviser or even a bank collector, or - worse still - you are a so-called matron who for some mercenary, against the lyrical charm of an uhlan or the insatiable conquest of a poet, he defends his daughters' virtues, fortunately, usually in vain) - well, if you can afford to agree with me, then in consequence you cannot deny that the spirit of Romanticism, before it took winged phalanx of poets from the beginning of the XNUMXth century, in the ranks of the cavalry he found the first followers and apostles of his unbridled momentum, his worldlyness and this love for extraordinary, fantastic deeds, beyond the imagination of ordinary people - indeed - breaking almost above the laws of nature.

Prof. Jacek Majchrowski in his book entitled "Cezar's Favorite..." (1990, published by Ossolineum), considered to be the best biography of Wieniawa-Długoszowski, writes about the General:

Undoubtedly, the life of Bolesław Wieniawa-Długoszowski was so varied and rich in events that it would be enough to share several biographies.

(...)

If you want to sum up Wieniawa's biography and figure, you can do it with the words of one of his associates.

Antoni Mańkowski called him "a man of comprehensive intelligence, comprehensively educated and with versatile interests, noble, chivalrous ... grew up from childhood on the old traditions of a Polish noble family. A man who combines all the qualities of a soldier, tough in a soldier's way and understanding in a soldier's way, a believing Christian contrary to common judgments, a man of great heart, good in the full sense of the word(A. Mańkowski, Wołodyjowski, "Nowy Świat", August 23, 1942).

I fully agree with this opinion.

In September 1999, the equestrian community spread the news about the visit to Poland of General Michał Gutowski - a pre-war cavalryman, Olympian, living in Canada since the end of the war.

Thanks to the efforts of the Polish Equestrian Association, General Gutowski was a lecturer during a special session of the training course organized at the Stud of Stallions in Łąck. There I had the opportunity to meet a man who created the legend of interwar Polish equestrianism - one of the few who remembered and participated in the successes of Polish riders in international competitions.

Mr. Michał Gutowski was then 89 years old. He was in excellent physical and mental condition. Watching films from his 88th birthday in Łąck, during which he rode a horse, overcoming cross-country obstacles smoothly and stylishly, it was hard to hide admiration and reflect on his own future.
