Bow. vet. Arabian horse breeder, in the years 2000-2016 president of the Janów Podlaski Stud, vice-president of the World Federation of Arabian Horses (WAHO).

The Stud Farm in Janów Podlaski is a monument of our material culture. Unique because it is still alive, allowing breeders, horse lovers and numerous tourists visiting the stud farm to experience a journey into the past and breathe the air of the early 19th century, when horses were everyday companions of the people of that time.

Our task is to take care of the Janów stud farm with its horses, tradition, architecture and preserve this national treasure for future generations.

The stud farm's over two-hundred-year history clearly shows that regardless of the economic or political system, state stud farms had and still have a very important mission to fulfill. The aim of their activities was and still is to provide domestic breeders with access to genetic resources necessary for breeding.

This mission today is as important, or perhaps even more important, than in the past. History clearly shows that both in Poland and in many other countries of the world, horse breeding has experienced ups and downs. Large and highly successful private stud farms disappeared, and their achievements were not continued due to the lack of equally talented successors. The great sensitivity of private horse breeding to macroeconomic disturbances and random events causes a sudden interruption in the continuity of breeding work. Numerous examples, one of the most important being the history of the Janów Podlaski Stud Farm, show that state stud farms, resistant to economic factors, are a gene bank that allows field breeding to be reactivated after temporary crises. If the Jarczowiec, Sławuck, Antoniński and Radowiec mares had not been gathered in Janów after World War I, these lines, so important for breeding, would almost certainly have disappeared and it is difficult to imagine the modern breeding of pure-bred Arabian horses in Poland and in the world without their presence. On October 6, 1816, Tsar Alexander I of Russia signed a decree establishing the State Stud Farm and Stallion Stud. The over 200-year history of this stud farm is a beautiful history of Polish and world Arabian horse breeding.

______________________________________________________________

Both the stud farm and its horses owe their modern form to a man who, for fifty years of work, never missed a single morning round - Andrzej Krzyształowicz, a great charismatic personality and a wonderful breeder. When asked about the definition of success for the horses he bred, he replied: "You have to feel the issue and be there."

(...)

When it comes to breeding, I started to adopt Mr. Krzyształowicz's way of looking at horses. It wasn't exactly the same look, because I also had my own tastes, some ideal of a horse. Breeding is a constant necessity of choice. It would be great to be able to be guided only by your feeling of what you want to keep or sell. Let's assume that the stud farm is to have a certain number of mares. Their selection doesn't look like this: I don't like the one, I throw it away, and I keep the one that is of high quality. That would be too easy. Here, a compromise is needed between the interests of breeding, i.e. the quality of horses, and the interests of the stud farm, which must survive.

These goals are mutually exclusive in the short term, but in the long term they are very similar. However, to understand this and make appropriate decisions, the breeder and the economist must be one person. Then, as a breeder, no one will tell me that the money at the end of the year must be this and that, because he has planned three million for me and that's how much I have to earn. I will not order myself to achieve a certain income at any cost just because otherwise the company's financial plan will suffer. This price would be the sale of the best horses.

(...)

This is basically the quintessence of the Polish breeding philosophy: to have the most selected, highest quality broodmares possible and to constantly look for fresh blood, not to cause too much relatedness. We are constantly looking for different stallions that could produce good offspring with these mares. In Poland, efforts have been made to achieve this from the very beginning. This was the most convenient way and it was the fastest way to achieve breeding progress. Because a mare gives birth to one foal a year, while a stallion can be the father of hundreds of offspring. So its impact on breeding is huge. One stud dog in a stud farm is enough. If it's good, it takes it to the next level. And the old Polish rule was that stallions were imported from the desert. Expeditions rarely brought mares.

Some people did not understand what the mission of the state breeding farm was. Why, for example, can't the best stallions be made available cheaply and for each mare? Breeders usually think that their "babies" are the most beautiful. And that's why you go to reviews and shows, so that by judging you can become more objective about what you do yourself and what others achieve. State stud farms also exist to ensure that private breeding is as good as possible. No one ever refused advice or help, even though it wasn't always what someone wanted to hear.

(...)

However, there is something else that we will have to come back to and think about in the future. On September 28, 1937, Professor Witold Pruski founded the Horse Museum in Janów with an entry in the guest book. Due to the war, it could not be organized. I was planning such a museum, there are so many awards and trophies that I don't know what to do with. I wanted such a modern center to be built in the place where the "Wygoda" guest house is located. It is my great guilt that I have not been able to do this so far. And probably a challenge for his successors. When I left, I left the finished design of such a building with all the arrangements, and above all, with the approval of the conservator.

It was founded in 1953. It took over the horses from the stud in Klemensów, near Zamość, which was liquidated at the same time. Together with the horses, a breeder, Mr. Ignacy Jaworowski, was transferred to Michałów, later its director for many years.

-

Michałów Stud has been breeding Arabian horses for almost 50 years. It is the largest stud farm of this breed in Poland and one of the largest in Europe and in the world. It belongs to the Agricultural Property Agency of the State Treasury - Regional Branch in Warsaw. It owns 382 Arabian horses, including 110 mares.

In addition, the Michałów Stud breeds Lesser Poland horses of the rare Tarrant color - 26 pcs., Shetland ponies (below 100 cm at the withers) - 15 pcs. and has two breeding herds of dairy cattle: Jersey and black and white with a large amount of Holstein-Friese , a total of 391 units, including 156 cows.

The stud farm is located in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodship, in a beautiful area called Ponidzie, 45 km south of Kielce, 230 km south of Warsaw, 100 km north of Kraków (25 km south-east of Michałów is Wiślica, the capital of the Wiślan state; according to According to the latest research, the Vistulans were baptized 100 years before Mieszko 1).

The total land area of Michałów Stud is 639 ha. Agricultural land covers an area of 620 ha, including 95 ha of pastures, 107 ha of meadows and 418 ha of arable land. The soil is mainly rendzina with a marl base, rich in calcium and other minerals. From the perspective of several decades, it can be said that the environment for purebred Arabian horses here is by all means favorable.

The first pure Arabian mares came to Michałów as early as 1950, to the half-bred stud that exists here. They were: ARMENIA gray daughter of Witraż and MIRIAM and MUFTA bay daughters of Miech Pełkiński.

In 1953, by the decision of the Minister of Agriculture, Arabian horses from Stud Klemensów near Zamość were transferred to the Michałów Stud, 22 mares arrived: ADIS ABEBA, AKRA.AMBA, AMNERIS, ANGARA, BAJADERA, BRUSSA, DAMBA, EL ZABIBE, EPIZODA, FANFARA, FORTA, GAŁKA, GAZELLA, GWARA, LALA, LAGUNA, MOKDIARA, ORDA, SAGA, VERBENA, ZAHABU.
After the racing training was completed in autumn, the following young mares arrived: CIWITA, COSMOSA, CZAJKA, CZIKA, DARDA, DARIBBA, DEUA, DEVERA.

At the end of 1953, there were 33 purebred Arabian mares and currently we have 110 mares. Since the beginning of the Stud's existence, 116 stallions from second sire lines have been used, 2289 purebred foals have been born. 943 horses were sold for export.

Mares - characteristics of currently owned families:

Arabian mares in Michałów Stud belong to 10 dam families: Gazella db, Miecha db, Sahara db, Milordka, Ukrainka, Szwejkowska, Wołoszka, Selma db, Rodania db. and Semrie or.ar.
Two families deserve special mention: MILORDKA and SZWEJKOWSKA.

From the perspective of almost 70 years of the Stud's existence, the most valuable mare that came to Michałów was ESTOKADA kast, born on 1951 by Amurath Sahib out of Saga by Hardy bred by SK Klemensów from the female family of the mare Milordka – Sławuta. This family currently has 43 representatives in Michałów and is the most representative and adequate family for the entire Stud.

The second epoch-making mare that came to Michałów Stud in 1953 was WERBENA kast, born in 1945. 2000 by Wojski out of Kalina Wnuczek by Koheilan I from the dam of SZWEJKOWSKA – Sławuta. In 200, this family celebrated the 11th anniversary of documented breeding. Currently, there are 1986 mares from this family at the stud. This family is famous for many great horses, e.g. WARMIA, WIZJA and others, but her greatest glory for the stallion WOJSŁAW gn. born XNUMX by Tallinn (Tiersk) from Vileyka by El Paso, thanks to which the dying line of the stallion was saved. Bairac-tar or.ar. Wojsław – Champion of Poland, top-class sire, has already sired many valuable dams and four top stallions: DRUID out of Dalida, EMENOR out of Emanacja, MONAR out of Mitręga and WERBUM out of Werda.

Record prices were obtained for the following horses: DIANA $1.200.000 USA; US $609.000 DEFICIT; DRUID $500.000 Türkiye; ESTATE EUR 1.125.000 UAE; FALLADA EUR 465.000 Belgium; PIACENZA EUR 475.000 Qatar; EJ RE NE EUR 440.000 UAE; EL SAGHIRA EUR 500.000 UAE; PIACOLLA EUR 305.000 Saudi Arabia.

The first privately bred horse in post-war history to become Polish Junior Champion. Over the next years, this stallion won several dozen shows, both national and international.
______________________________________________________________

Since 1998, the Białka Stud (formerly a stallion herd) near Krasnystaw has hosted the Junior Arabian Spring Show. And while each of them has its place in the history of breeding horses of this breed, the show, which took place from May 31 to June 1, 2003, was clearly remembered by the breeders. For the first time a privately bred horse won his class, the championship and became the best horse of the show.

And that horse was the gray colt Girlan Bey, bred by Katarzyna and Michał Bogajewicz, who were the owners of Niewierz Stud, located near Poznań.

Girlan Bey's ancestor - the gray stallion Ilderim db 1894 was imported to Sławuta in 1900. This stud farm for generations (1506-1917) was owned by the Sanguszko Princes. Picturesquely situated among forests on the Wołońska plateau on the Horyń River, which is the right tributary of the Pripyat.

As Stefan Bojanowski writes:You will not see such a second stable anywhere in the world because in this stable there are usually about 100 carriages and riding horses, and these horses are all stallions, and these stallions are all Arabians - because Prince Roman Sanguszko does not use any other horse for his harness and saddle only stallions and only Arabian. Sanguszów horses have high Eastern blood - constantly refreshed by the best original sires used. The Sławuta herd, i.e. the sires, mothers and youngsters, was not located in Sławuta itself, but in Chrestówka and is often called the Chrystowieskie herd.”

An outstanding sire, father of 128 offspring in Poland. Sam ran below average (Wp 0,87), but the relative genetic value (RGV) of his offspring in relation to their peers in terms of racing prowess was 437,10 - the highest among the 65 tested stallions. For 13 years he maintained a constant advantage of the largest group of offspring in relation to the largest peer group in terms of this feature.

Most of his offspring combined bravery and beauty - they won eight championships and four reserve champions of the Polish National Arabian Horse Shows, and in 8 years, stallions or mares by Bandos were in the top five in terms of the success rate.

Among them was the Derby winner Kabaret 1973 (out of Kreolka), Wp 5,55;, the winner of the Hamburg Derby Wist 1973 (out of Wilma), Wp 5,76; oak player Nawa 1973 (from Newa), Wp 1,90; triple-crowned Arra 1975 (out of Arba), Wp 5,06, after career Polish and European Champion; winners of the Comparative Pepton 1977 (out of Pemba), Wp 8,67, later Polish Champion and Złoty Potok 1981 (out of Zamieć), Wp 10,45. The history of the first stage in the history of the Arabian horse auction in Janów Podlaski in the years 1970 - 1991 according to Marek Grzybowski.

Contemporary breeding of Arabian horses in Poland is the legacy of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which politically and culturally bordered the Orient, and the enormous magnate fortunes enabled the import of the finest stallions and mares.

This thought was the guiding idea for me to promote both the breeding and the Janów auction, which I gave the title "Polish Prestige" at some point.

In order to invite people from the richest circles of this world to the gray and poor country behind the Iron Curtain, it was necessary to convince them that the product offered was second to none, and what's more - it could only be created in Poland thanks to the huge expenditures and uninterrupted work of many generations of Polish breeders .

SOME HISTORICAL REFLECTIONS

The export of Arabian horses is a business in Poland almost as old as breeding. The first recorded transaction took place in 1800, when the Great Hetman of the Crown, Count Seweryn Rzewuski, sold the leading stallion of his breeding to the East Prussian Weedern herd. The proud magnate did not hesitate to give his horse his own name, which can be considered an excellent promotional move. A good name usually favors a horse's career, I dedicate this thought to the modern breeders of Relax, Fartów, Gryp and Floder. The stallion Rzewuski did not bring shame to his surname, his daughters were the backbone of the breeding in Weedern.

When today we are trying to win Middle Eastern markets for our breeding, let us remember that already in 1864 the Turkish sultan bought two stallions from the Branicki family in Biała Cerkiew: Inak and Jarzmo, and a group of 90 mares for his royal stud in Istanbul. The power of the Branicki breeding is evidenced by the fact that during 53 years (1818-1870) they sold 2009 horses and gave away 1231 horses as gifts, which was meticulously recorded in their studbooks. Could the contemporary Polish Arabian horse, valued everywhere in the world but almost unknown in its own country, not be an excellent Polish state gift, winning over crowned heads in Arab countries, opening contacts and exporting various Polish products?

The mare Bałałajka, gray, born in 1941 (Amurath Sahib – Iwonka III), bred by Krasnica estate.
______________________________________________________________

She trusts people and friends. She was characterized by skin as black as ebony, covered with snow-white hair and huge charming eyes, from which she radiated goodness. Mother of Bandola, considered the queen of Polish Arabs.

______________________________________________________________

(...)

“At that time, Captain Zdzisław Rozwadowski often visited Albigowa and knew all the mares well. Once he asked me which I value more: Wilga or Bałałajka. I replied without a moment's thought that, of course, Balalaika. And she wasn't that famous back then. Balalaika had a unique charm. It was impossible not to love her deeply. There was something about her that captivated everyone. She trusts people and friends. On the other hand, Oriole was able to get out of her box by stomping her front leg, which lasted until the undesirable culprit closed the door behind him. This was unthinkable for Balalaika. Kindness radiated from her beautiful eyes. I don't know if any other Polish Arabian mare was so graceful.

Black as ebony skin, covered with snow-white fur. Huge charming eyes, looking in a specific way. A beautiful head set on a long neck. A great mountain, on perfect, dry legs. I wonder how it was rated today in Janów. She wouldn't beat Pianissima, but Gascony would.

Unfortunately, in the times when Balalaika lived, exports were just beginning. If she had been born even ten years later, all her offspring would have joined the western breeding and had a great influence on it, as did Bask 1956 and Bacchatka 1957. Bandola 1948 almost shared their fate. Fortunately, she was already too famous in the country.

Almost all of Bałałajka's offspring were after Witraż, which was not inferior to her in charm, but certainly in character. (…)

Bałałajka gave birth to the unique BANDOLA (1948), recognized as the queen of Polish Arabians. Beautiful but tough. I treated her like a diamond in the crown, not like "cuddly" Arfa and their mother. She was more like her father, both in build and character. She gave birth to four daughters: Banda 1962, Beatrice 1963, Bandama 1970 and Ballada 1975, whose son was the well-known stallion Balon 1979, as well as five sons: Bajrama 1959 (Canadian Champion), Barysz 1960 (Canadian Top Ten) and used in the country: Bazaja 1964, Banata 1967 (British Champion) and very distinguished in Polish breeding Bandos 1964. Bandola lived to be 35 years old.
(...)

And in 1956, BASK is born, which is too famous to need to be written about. It is interesting that the weaker BANIO was used in breeding, and Bask was not allowed to cover even one mare before leaving for the USA. If Mr. La Croix had come to Janów one day later, he would not have found Bask a stallion. But God watches over good men and good horses. (Over the latter, Mohammed rather does.)
(...)

Unfortunately, Balalaika got very severe asthma in her old age and it was a pity to watch her suffer. And the doctors at the time couldn't help her. She needed to end her suffering...

There were not many mares in Poland similar in value and beauty to Bałałajka, although there are many great mares that made Polish breeding famous. Lately, their fame has been extended by Pianissima, with a beauty that in my time even a human could not have dreamed of being bred. But what will happen next…

Pepita was born on January 29, 2005. In 2008, she ran at WTWK in Wrocławskie Partynice at distances of 5×2000 meters, 1×1800 and 1×1600, and her results out of 7 starts were 1xI, 1xII, 1xIII and 3xIV, which, as you can see, did not hurt her beauty, and was part of the philosophy Polish Arab who is supposed to be beautiful and brave. Its dimensions are 150 - 176 - 18,75. In 2010, she is fourth at the National Show in Janów, but already in 2014 she wins the mare class and becomes the Senior Mare Champion and Best in Show.

Pepita is the daughter of Michałów's multichampion, the gray Ekstern, who won all the shows in which he participated. In 2000 he became Polish National Senior Stallion Champion, All Nations Cup Champion in Aachen, European and World Champion. He also has the WAHO trophy, awarded in 2008 to an outstanding representative of purebred Arabian Polish breeding.

Pepita's mother - grey, with a beautiful coat from Janów, Pepesza is the daughter of the legendary Eukaliptus. She was born on February 1993, 6, and passed away on January 2018, 2006. She was sold at an auction in Janów in 135 for PLN XNUMX. euro. Her photo with the stable kitty won the cover of an auction catalogue. After the sale, the auctioneer said that this price also included this kitten. It is not known whether he went with his stablemate to Hennessy Arabians in Florida. She captivated with her type, swan neck, beautiful head and movement. In Janów, she left daughters Polifonia, Pernilla, Pensacola and Pepita, and sons Perseusz and Pegasus.
