The first Summer Olympic Games in which Poland took part. Our representatives won two medals, India. bronze (Adam Królikiewicz / Picador) and team silver (track cyclists).
______________________________________________________________

In November 1922, I was surprised by a summons to report to the Cavalry Department of the Ministry of Military Affairs in Warsaw. There I found out that I was appointed as an instructor of the CSKaw formation. in Grudziądz, a group of officers, candidates to participate in the Olympics in Paris.

I took the liberty of reporting that I had already been assigned to CSKaw., but the Commander resigned from my assignment because of my article in Bellona. It was explained to me that the group being formed would be subordinated to the CSKaw Command. only economic and disciplinary, and general training supervision will be held by Col. Zahorski, so there is nothing to be afraid of

When asked if I could name another officer. whom I considered suitable for the group, I had no hesitation in naming 2nd Lt. Kazimierz Szosland from the XNUMXnd Regiment of the University of Warsaw, who had already ridden there under my supervision, was a sincere horse lover and a very talented rider. My proposal was accepted and the appropriate order was signed.

(...)

The so-called Olympic group consisted of a dozen or so officers, ranging from second lieutenants to captains, and a little later also majors, representing various regiments of mounted weapons, who came here with their horses. They were all horse riding enthusiasts and if few of them made it to the Olympics, it was not because of lack of passion, but because of their abilities, the requirements for which were very high. Things weren't going well with the horses. There was a lack of horses of outstanding quality and we tried to fill these gaps with conscientious, systematic work. It took place in a friendly atmosphere characterized by mutual kindness.

After half a year of the group's existence, the former great competition rider Dymitr Ekse was engaged as a civilian instructor. He was partly Russian, partly Swedish, and apparently had German blood as well.

After his arrival, work continued as usual. I remained his deputy and, as a soldier, the group leader. Everything was going very well for us. With the arrival of spring and the beginning of the competition season, the entire group took part in numerous competitions to check the value of individual horses and riders. Mention should be made of the Warsaw competitions organized on the Mokotów race track by the Society for the Encouragement of Horse Breeding in Poland and near Krakow in Krzeszowice by the Krakow Society of Horse Riding Enthusiasts (if I remember the name of the Society exactly).

A little later than the Grudziądz group, a smaller sports group was established in Warsaw at the 1st Cavalry Regiment, led by Maj. Karol Rómmel. (…)

The best Polish rider before WWI. Between 1894 and 1914 he won over 300 awards. In 1912-13 he competed in Wielka Pardubice (2x second place - Zeppelin).

______________________________________________________________

TADEUSZ DACHOWSKI, born in 1870 Leśkowa, Kiev land. Mr. Tadeusz Dachowski's father, Kazimierz, was one of the oldest breeders of thoroughbred horses.

Already as a child, T. Dachowski developed a taste for horses and developed an eye for beautiful models of his father's herd.

After graduating from secondary school at the Jesuit Fathers in Tarnopol in 1899, T. Dachowski entered the Faculty of Architecture of the Dresden University of Technology. At that time, the Leśków herd was liquidated.

After returning from Dresden, T. Dachowski started horse riding, but not systematically and without any thought of public performances.

In 1894, T. Dachowski was invited for the first time by the late. Mr. Józefa count. Potockiego to Antoniny for the horse hunting season.

The performance was unfortunate. T. Dachowski rode a great hunter from the Antonińska stable, "Dublet". This horse, very energetic, carried its rider at the very beginning of the run, but in the opposite direction to which the hunt went.

Then T. Dachowski realized how far he was from good driving, especially from following dogs.

This episode and great ambition stimulated the young rider to study horse riding very seriously.

T. Dachowski's first public appearance took place in 1895 during the Jarmoliniec races, where he was lucky and won his first competition prize on "Medusa", a pupil of St. Janowski.

After this successful debut, T. Dachowski purchased a couple of new horses for par-force hunting.

In 1896, fate brought him together with the new director of the Antoniński stables, Mr. Egon v, Kadich, a certified instructor from the "Reitlehrer Institut" in Vienna. T. Dachowski stays in Antoniny for almost two winters and only to work under the supervision of Mr. Kadich. The work began with the horse riding alphabet, riding 6 horses a day.

Since then, the golden book of T. Dachowski's equestrian career has been written: - horse hunting for a fox in the Roman Campania, for a fallow deer in Bracciano, competitions in Vienna, Berlin, Budapest, Lviv, Krakow, Marburg, steeplechase in Pardubice, cross-country runs, obstacle races and etc. etc

The year 1903 was particularly lucky, in which T. Dachowski, taking part in competitions, obstacle races and cross-country races, was never beaten.

In 1912 and 13, T. Dachowski took part in the most difficult steeple in Pardubice.

Each time he rode his own "Zeppelin", bred by Kaz. Ostoia-Ostaszewskiego. In 1912, out of 13 starting horses, three finished the race, and in 1913, out of 8 horses, 4 or 5 finished the race. "Zeppelin" never failed, which is a great rarity here, constantly taking second place, just behind the winner.

Counting only victories and second prizes, until the outbreak of World War T. Dachowski won over 280 awards. Since he managed to return to the country in 1921 after numerous and difficult experiences, he has been taking part in competitions in Krakow, Vienna, Piotrków and Warsaw, but only on other people's horses, winning more than one first prize.

Kazimierz Stanisław de Rostwo-Suski was born on September 21, 1891 in Karpowce in Volhynia. He was the son of Tadeusz and Maria Przyborowska. He graduated from the Real School in Krakow, passing the high school leaving examination in 1909. In the years 1909-1910 he studied at the Vienna University of Technology, and then in the years 1910-1914 at the Agricultural University of Tabor in the Czech Republic, from which he graduated with an agronomist diploma.

From August 1914 to October 1918, he served in the Austrian army. He participated in the First World War. In 1916, he was promoted to second lieutenant, and in 1918 - to lieutenant. On November 1, 1918, he joined the Polish Army. He was a professional soldier. In 1920, he was promoted to captain. During the Polish-Soviet War, he commanded a squadron of the 6th Uhlan Regiment.

In the interwar period, captain Kazimierz Rostwo-Suski served successively in the 6th and 4th Regiment of Uł., in the Cavalry Department of the Ministry of Military Affairs, in the School of Professional Cavalry Non-Commissioned Officers in Jaworów (1929-1930), in the 6th Mounted Rifle Regiment in Żółkiew (1931-1935 ) and in 21st P. Uł. Nadwiślańskie in Równe, where he was deputy commander from 1936. In the opinion of his superior (Colonel Col. Adam Korytkowski), he was an officer of upright character, strong will, extremely hard-working, proactive, with great initiative; very intelligent, sharp and precise mind; tactically very good, completely prepared to command the regiment. During this time, he was promoted - in 1931 to major, and in 1937 - to lieutenant colonel. In the spring of 1939, he completed the regiment commanders' course in Rembertów, and on August 13, 1939, he took up the position of commander of the 21st Regiment Commander. In the opinion of Brig. Gen. Władysław Anders, Kazimierz Rostwo-Suski was an outstanding cavalry staff officer and an exemplary quartermaster.

He became interested in horse sports in the early 1921s. In 12, a Riding Club was established in Warsaw, which in the first days of June organized equestrian competitions on the horse racing track at Pola Mokotowskie. Twelve competitions were held then, and one of the main prizes was won by Captain. Kazimierz Rostwo-Suski on his horse Gogo. As a very good rider, in 1921 he was sent to a horse riding course at the Central Riding School (hereinafter referred to as CSJ) in Grudziądz, and in 1922 he qualified, together with the horses: General, Kleopatra and Qui Vive, for the Olympic group established in Warsaw at 1st Light Cavalry Regiment, led by Maj. Karol Rómmel. The second group led by Maj. Dymitr Exe and Lt. Leon Kon was established in Grudziądz at CSJ. In 1924, representatives of both groups took part in many international competitions, which were a test before the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris and were to ultimately determine the composition of the national team. Rtm. Rostwo-Suski participated in competitions in Nice, where he was part of the team that took 31th place in the Nations Cup on Generale, and in Lucerne, where Polish riders won a total of XNUMX awards.

In Poland's Olympic debut at the Games in Paris in 1924, he represented the national colors in eventing, held from July 21 to 26. 46 competitors from 13 countries took part in the competition, including 10 national teams. In the Polish team, apart from Rtm. Kazimierz Rostwo-Suski, who, due to an injury to his best horse General, started on the reserve Lady, also included: Lt. Col. K. Rómmel, Maj. T. Komorowski and Lt. K. Szosland. The competition was difficult, most of the Polish horses, shod by a French blacksmith, lost their shoes during the cross-country test, which did not have a positive impact on the course of the competition, but ultimately the entire team finished the cross country. On July 26, the last part of eventing took place - a show jumping competition. All the horses felt the hardships of the previous attempt and jumped reluctantly, but the Polish riders finished the competition intact. Ultimately, Kazimierz Rostwo-Suski was XXIV as the reserve Lady, the rest took the following places: X - K. Rómmel, XXIII - K. Szosland and XXVI - T. Komorowski.

On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the Relief of Vienna (1683) - on the initiative of Marshal Józef Piłsudski, on October 6, 1933, the last cavalry revue in the history of Polish military took place on Błonia in Krakow. The ceremony was attended by the most important authorities of the Republic of Poland: Marshal Józef Piłsudski, President Ignacy Mościcki and delegations from other countries.

Eighty years ago, on October 6, 1933, the largest - and last - Polish cavalry revue took place on the Krakow meadows. Lieutenant Colonel Dipl. Wacław Jędrzejewicz (from September 1933, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Treasury, later biographer of Marshal Józef Piłsudski), who took part in the celebrations in Krakow, wrote: It was one of the greatest celebrations I have ever seen in my life, and I have seen many of them. The direction of every moment of this kind of spectacle was perfected and aroused universal admiration. Piłsudski himself was pleased that the plan he had worked out in detail was a complete success.

The scenario of the Krakow event to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the victory of Jan III Sobieski near Vienna was planned by Józef Piłsudski from the spring of 1933, or maybe even earlier. In April 1933, a briefing was held at the Marshal's, attended by: Maj. Gen. Kazimierz Fabrycy, 2st Deputy Minister of Military Affairs, Brig. Gen. Bolesław Wieniawa-Długoszowski, commander of the 250nd Cavalry Division (Warsaw) and major diploma. Adam Korwin-Sokołowski, head of the Cabinet of the Minister of Military Affairs. It was then that Piłsudski issued directives regarding the celebration of the XNUMXth anniversary of Sobieski's victory at Vienna.

The cavalry training center of the Polish Army of the Second Republic of Poland in 1928-1939 in the Grudziądz garrison. It was the largest military training unit of this type in Europe.

-

The role of the Cavalry Training Center in the history and even the present of Polish horse riding cannot be overestimated. The center educated not only officers of the permanent service and reserve cavalry, but what we call a Polish school, which is a variation of the natural school of Italian horse riding, was established at the Cavalry Training Center in Grudziądz. Previously known as the Central Riding School, Cavalry School Camp. The leading instructors and riders in the interwar period were associated with the Cavalry Training Centre.

It was in Grudziądz that Lt. Col. Karol Rommel, Capt. Leon Kon, Lieutenant Colonel Jan Kossak Major Adam Królikiewicz, Capt. Kazimierz Szosland, Major Michał Antoniewicz, Major Wilhelm Lewicki and many others. The successes of Polish horse riding in the interwar period were associated with Grudziądz. The Cavalry Training Center organized a number of courses for officers and non-commissioned officers (e.g. Staff Officers Course, Squadron Commanders Course, Horse Riding NCOs Course, Horse Riding Instructors Course, Professional Cavalry NCOs Course, Veterinary Doctors Course, Regimental Adjutants Course).

After the Second World War, despite the fact that the Center no longer existed, the officers associated with it participated in the reconstruction of Polish horse breeding and equestrianism. Lt. Col. Karol Rómmel, Major Adam Królikiewicz, Major Wiktor Olędzki, Capt. Jan Mikunas, Capt. Jaroslaw Suchorski, Col. Kazimierz de Rostwo-Suski, Col. Antoni Dębski and Mr. Marek Rozczynialski as trainers. Col. Aleksander Piotraszewski, Major Marian Fabrycy, Mr. Sas-Jaworski as Breeders. Leon Chatizow as a racing coach.

The current generation of equestrian trainers have mostly been trained by cavalry and artillery officer trainers.

The officers who served in emigration had significant achievements in equestrian sport. Major Anatol Pieregorodzki, and later Gen. Michał Gutowski, as coaches of the Canadian national eventing team, achieved Olympic successes. Major Michał Antoniewicz was the coach of the US national team, also with Olympic successes. Major Janusz Komorowski was the coach of the national team of Argentina, Major Seweryn Kulesza was the coach of the national team of Belgium and Ireland. Rtm. Bronislaw Skulicz and Capt. Antoni Żelewski were coaches in Belgium. Major Władysław Zgorzelski distinguished himself as a coach and polo player in Uruguay. Major Jerzy Iwanowski ran the equivalent of the Spanish Riding School in South Africa.

On February 18, 1928, an organizational meeting was convened in the ballroom of the Garrison Casino in Warsaw, during which representatives of 18 sports clubs adopted the statute and established the Polish Equestrian Association (hereinafter: PZJ). Members - founders of the Association were: Society of International and National Equestrian Competitions in Poland, Societies for the Encouragement of Horse Breeding: Lubelskie (Lublin), Małopolskie (Lviv), Piotrkowskie (Piotrków), Pomeranian (Grudziądz), Radomskie (Radom), Wielkopolskie (Poznań) , Vilnius (Vilnius) and Wołyńskie (Równe), Sports and Breeding Club in Grajewo, Kujawsko-Mazowieckie Sports Club (Włocławek), Krakow Horse Riding Club (Kraków), Polo-Club (Warsaw), Przemyśl Horse Riding Club (Przemyśl) , Equestrian Association "Sport Equestrian" of Horse Artillery Officers (Warsaw), Association of Horse Competitions of the Kielce Region (Kielce), Greater Poland Horse Riding Club (Poznań), Eastern Borderland Horse Riding Club (Baranowicze).

Then the authorities were elected. Słk Zbigniew Brochwicz-Lewiński, then director of the Cavalry Department of the Ministry of Military Affairs (hereinafter: MSWojsk.), was appointed as the president. The function of vice-presidents was entrusted to Fryderyk Jurjewicz - director of the Department of Horse Breeding at the Ministry of Agriculture and Brig. Stanisław Sochaczewski, Lt. Col. Dipl. Tadeusz Machalski, and for the treasurer - patron Tadeusz Michalski. The board of PZJ also consisted of: Słk dypl. Wladyslaw Anders, hr. Józef Breza, Jerzy Ciechomski, Colonel Leon Dunin-Wolski, Capt. Leon Kon, General Robert Lamezan Sallins and Brig. Stanisław Skotnicki. After the death of Fryderyk Jurjewicz (1929), the position of vice-president was taken over by Eng. Jan Grabowski, director of the Horse Breeding Department.

The main objectives of the PZJ were:
1) coordinating the activities of all societies promoting equestrian sport in its various forms, with the exception of horse racing, covered by the Act on Racing and Racing Rules; 2) unifying the classification and conditions of competitions;
3) representing Polish horse riding abroad;
4) preparation and organization of equestrian teams for the Olympic Games;
5) joining the International Equestrian Federation (Fédération Equestre Internationale - FEI).

The implementation of these tasks was not easy and took time. Thus, no abrupt reforms were introduced that could disrupt the normal course of the annual competition. PZJ decided to act systematically and consistently.

"Reader, if you agree with me that there are only two professions in the world worthy of a liberated and independent man, namely that of a poet and a cavalryman (so much the worse for you if you disagree with this statement, because it proves that you are neither one nor the other, and you are, however, even if you count only twenty autumns or pseudo-springs, an old and bald tetryk with aspirations to be a senior tax adviser or even a bank collector, or - worse still - you are a so-called matron who for some mercenary, against the lyrical charm of an uhlan or the insatiable conquest of a poet, he defends his daughters' virtues, fortunately, usually in vain) - well, if you can afford to agree with me, then in consequence you cannot deny that the spirit of Romanticism, before it took winged phalanx of poets from the beginning of the XNUMXth century, in the ranks of the cavalry he found the first followers and apostles of his unbridled momentum, his worldlyness and this love for extraordinary, fantastic deeds, beyond the imagination of ordinary people - indeed - breaking almost above the laws of nature.

Prof. Jacek Majchrowski in his book entitled “Ulubieniec Cezara…” (1990, published by Ossolineum), considered the best biography of Wieniawa-Długoszowski, writes about the General:

Undoubtedly, the life of Bolesław Wieniawa-Długoszowski was so varied and rich in events that it would be enough to share several biographies.

(...)

If you want to sum up Wieniawa's biography and figure, you can do it with the words of one of his associates.

Antoni Mańkowski called him "a man of comprehensive intelligence, comprehensively educated and with versatile interests, noble, chivalrous ... grew up from childhood on the old traditions of a Polish noble family. A man who combines all the qualities of a soldier, tough in a soldier's way and understanding in a soldier's way, a believing Christian contrary to common judgments, a man of great heart, good in the full sense of the word” (A. Mańkowski, Wołodyjowski, “Nowy Świat”, August 23, 1942).

I fully agree with this opinion.

Art visionary. Painter. A graduate of the School of Fine Arts in Krakow and Munich. Author of such works as: "Olszynka Grochowska Charge of the 5th Zamoyski Uhlan Regiment", "With a Dispatch", and "Uhlan's Rest".

______________________________________________________________

Co-creator of Panorama Racławicka - Wojciech Kossak, was born in Paris on New Year's Eve 1856.

After his godfather - Horace Vernet, the author of The Death of Prince Józef Poniatowski and the Battle of Somosierra, Wojciech received a second name, and perhaps this fact influenced his passion for painting and Paris, although life bound him forever with Krakow.

(...)

And that was where Wojciech Kossak's painting had its beginning, where society was hungry for pictures with historical content, glorification of the old Polish army, sustaining the spirit of independence and longing for a uniform.

”He was, like his father, a battle painter, the creator of panoramas and large-format compositions depicting war episodes not only from Polish history, but also from French or German history, avoiding subjects glorifying the army, especially the Prussian invader, and at the same time - Polish defeats. He created many portraits, most often representative images of European society or aristocracy. He willingly portrayed himself, but he did not look for knowledge about himself or personality traits by studying his face. He most often treated the self-portrait as an opportunity to present himself with dignity.

Wojciech Kossak painted every day, from his early teenage years, first under the watchful eye of his father - in Krakow, then during many years of education at the Munich Academy and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. It was not easy for a young, ambitious painter from Poland to become known in Paris. (…)

Memory Horseman. An actor for whom the love of cavalry tradition, service and loyalty to Poland became a life message.

He was born on April 20, 1942 in Uściług Wołyński.

______________________________________________________________

“A tall, slim and bearded Polish horseman wearing a uniform from the last war travels all over Europe to flower the famous places where the 1st Polish Armored Division of General Stanisław Maczek fought with poppies.

Such a person behaving anyway might seem a bit archaic, and the appearance of a cavalry officer, Włodzimierz Brodecki, seated on his horse, on the crowded thoroughfares is really surprising.

Meanwhile, about forty people - including the Polish chaplain, many Mayors and former combatants - gathered at the military cemetery d'Urville-Langannerie on Thursday around 11.00 to receive such an extraordinary rider of memory.

It must be said that the pious journey began much earlier and that already five years ago the same officer and on the same horse went to Italy near Monte Cassino, where poppies bloom profusely on the sites of bloody battles. This year's route began on July 29, 1989 in Krakow and ran through Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France to end on September 1 in Poland, where the anniversary of the start of the second world conflict will be celebrated. On Thursday, therefore, a short ceremony was held at the cemetery: the horseman came to pay homage in front of the mausoleum, on the threshold of which he placed a bouquet of poppies, having previously taken some earth from one of the graves to take it to a sacred place in Poland (the Garrison Church in Kielce).

Tomorrow will be Falaise, Chambois… 25000 km traveled across Europe by an extraordinary witness of Polish loyalty to the heroes who died in the war.”

Zdzislaw Dziadulski in the spring of 1940, together with the prisoners of war in Starobielsk, he was transported to Kharkov and murdered. He was 44 at the time. Buried together with other prisoners at the Cemetery of Victims of Totalitarianism in Kharkiv, in Pyatichatki.

1st Regiment of Light Cavalry of Józef Piłsudski

(mp. Warsaw, amaranth border).

The regiment referred to the tradition of the 1st Light Horse Regiment of the Polish Guard of Emperor Napoleon I and the 1st Uhlan Regiment of the Polish Legions "Belina". It was recreated in November 1918 by officers of the former 1st Light Horse Regiment of the Polish Legions, headed by Capt. Gustaw Orlicz-Dreszer. From 1921, the regiment was stationed in Warsaw near Belweder. It was said to be one of the elite cavalry regiments of the interwar period. It was popularly called the "National Guard", although it never officially received this name.

Rejoice, brave cavalryman,
You have protection at Belweder.

The cavalrymen shake their heads,
They want to be the National Guard.

They shake their asses, they shake their heads,
They want to be the National Guard.

They want to have guardsman manners.
Be Be ery, cavalry.

Always proud of his boss,
This is Piłsudski's cavalryman.

The cavalryman takes the upper hand,
Under the patronage of the Belweder Palace.

In the Belweder Palace, in the quarters
Sleep, brother cavalryman.

And remember, cavalryman,
That you are on guard at Belweder.

From the parade and the celebration,
For the protection of the President.

They are sitting like this in Warsaw
With a glass and a coffee.

The whole bunch are suckers
In the First Cavalry Regiment.

More gentlemen than suckers,
This is the first cavalry.

Some gentlemen and painters,
This is the first horse regiment.

From aides and doctors
Warsaw has a regiment of brats.
