Guardians: Family of Antoni Chłapowski

Rider, breeder and trainer. Descendant of General Dezydery Chłapowski. Creator and owner of the Horse Riding Center in Jaszków.

Born on January 2, 1944 in Lviv. Father Stanisław. Mother Wanda née Czerwińska. Sisters Maria, Janina, Elżbieta. Brothers Kazimierz, Mieczysław, Stanisław, Franciszek. Wife Marta née Klimowska. Daughter Magdalena. Graduate of the Higher School of Riding Instructors Strömsholm, Sweden.

"I met Antek in 1982 in Svenamo Gard, at his excellent riding centre 'Rid Sport Center' in Smaland, Sweden. A couple of my Polish friends got me involved in their ARK (Akademiska RidKlubben) group riding at Bromma Ridklubb in Appelviken, Stockholm. Robert and Irena asked me if I would like to go with them to a summer riding camp at the Pole Antek Chłapowski's. They didn't have to ask me twice. When we got there, we were greeted with a smile by a charming guy, full of energy, a huge fan of horses, both live and mechanical, as we found out later. Live horses were at the top of the hierarchy of daily activities. The day started with work in the stable, after which we could wash up and sit down for breakfast. When I entered the stable, I could hear classical music from the radio, all the stalls had their doors open and from each stall a horse's head stuck out, curious about this new rider. All the hooves were on the inside of the stall threshold. It was unbelievable that no horse dared to simply go for a walk. There was a family atmosphere intertwined with military drill. Even the horses knew that Antek had to be obeyed. They wouldn't have run far, because the center was located in the middle of the forest by the huge lake Rusken. All around there were beautiful forest hills, excellent for off-road riding, with long gallops on many sandy and stony roads typical of Småland.”

On February 18, 1928, an organizational meeting was convened in the ballroom of the Garrison Casino in Warsaw, during which representatives of 18 sports clubs adopted the statute and established the Polish Equestrian Association (hereinafter: PZJ). Members - founders of the Association were: Society of International and National Equestrian Competitions in Poland, Societies for the Encouragement of Horse Breeding: Lubelskie (Lublin), Małopolskie (Lviv), Piotrkowskie (Piotrków), Pomeranian (Grudziądz), Radomskie (Radom), Wielkopolskie (Poznań) , Vilnius (Vilnius) and Wołyńskie (Równe), Sports and Breeding Club in Grajewo, Kujawsko-Mazowieckie Sports Club (Włocławek), Krakow Horse Riding Club (Kraków), Polo-Club (Warsaw), Przemyśl Horse Riding Club (Przemyśl) , Equestrian Association "Sport Equestrian" of Horse Artillery Officers (Warsaw), Association of Horse Competitions of the Kielce Region (Kielce), Greater Poland Horse Riding Club (Poznań), Eastern Borderland Horse Riding Club (Baranowicze).

Then the authorities were elected. Słk Zbigniew Brochwicz-Lewiński, then director of the Cavalry Department of the Ministry of Military Affairs (hereinafter: MSWojsk.), was appointed as the president. The function of vice-presidents was entrusted to Fryderyk Jurjewicz - director of the Department of Horse Breeding at the Ministry of Agriculture and Brig. Stanisław Sochaczewski, Lt. Col. Dipl. Tadeusz Machalski, and for the treasurer - patron Tadeusz Michalski. The board of PZJ also consisted of: Słk dypl. Wladyslaw Anders, hr. Józef Breza, Jerzy Ciechomski, Colonel Leon Dunin-Wolski, Capt. Leon Kon, General Robert Lamezan Sallins and Brig. Stanisław Skotnicki. After the death of Fryderyk Jurjewicz (1929), the position of vice-president was taken over by Eng. Jan Grabowski, director of the Horse Breeding Department.

The main objectives of the PZJ were:
1) coordinating the activities of all societies promoting equestrian sport in its various forms, with the exception of horse racing, covered by the Act on Racing and Racing Rules; 2) unifying the classification and conditions of competitions;
3) representing Polish horse riding abroad;
4) preparation and organization of equestrian teams for the Olympic Games;
5) joining the International Equestrian Federation (Fédération Equestre Internationale - FEI).

The implementation of these tasks was not easy and took time. Thus, no abrupt reforms were introduced that could disrupt the normal course of the annual competition. PZJ decided to act systematically and consistently.

Born just one kilometer from Janów, in the Wygoda estate, in 1926. Son of a cavalryman (soldier of the 25th Wielkopolski Uhlan Regiment), Aleksander and Zofia.

The history of working with the horses of the future master began quite prosaically - with work in the field. As a young boy (6th grade of primary school) he walked horses to the Bug River meadows, riding bareback and working in the field in a harvester. In AD 39, the Second World War broke out. The herd and the stud were evacuated towards Romania before the Germans. On September 17, the Russians set off for Poland, so in order not to fall into their hands, after 2 weeks of marching, day and night, the horses returned home. The efforts of our groomers to save the herd and the stud proved futile, because after only 2 weeks the Russians seized all the horses and moved with them towards the Caucasus. Later, the borders with Germany on the Bug were established, and the horses stayed on the Russian side. During the occupation, the Germans rebuilt the farms in Janów.

In 41, Kowalczyk starts working as a groom, at that time the German-Russian conflict breaks out, and in 44, when the front moved towards Poland, the horses were evacuated deep into Germany. During the war, he survived the bombing of Dresden, where he found himself with the herd.
